Really depends on the field you're going into, but I agree that college sucks. I've been ever so slowly grinding away at my degree, but my bachelor's is just not high on my priority list. I get real world training on the job as well as certifications paid for by my employer that help my salary much more than a degree does.

Put more simply, in college I had to pay to learn stuff, most of which was not useful. In the real world, I get paid to learn stuff, most of which is very useful.

Why didn't you know to enroll in classes as soon as possible? I have students in high school, who long before they've graduated in June, have already made out their schedules for the fall semester. Sounds more like you waited too long to make out a schedule. That is, for this current semester that you're now in, my high school students were making out schedules for last May.

I'm sure it varies from college to college, but if I remember things correctly, incoming Freshman at my school didn't even get to chose their schedules (you filled out a form listing preferences and your major, and then someone at the registrar's office assigned you a bunch of 8 am gen ed's)... even after that, scheduling priority was based on seniority, so first year students just had to pick the crumbs up that the upper years left. typically, all the best teachers/best classes would be filled up with 3rd+ year students.

(though, I lucked out after a terrible first semester experience... joined a school program that gave me priority scheduling -- before seniors, even -- in exchange for community service)

Im unhappy with some things as well.

Spend a crapload on tuition, pick a class in a new hi-tech building, the room is tiny and cramped and not helpful for lefties. I have to use the mini desk in the next seat. Hopefully no one ever wants to take it.

Try to enjoy this time as much as you can. The costs are great, the education may even be mediocre, but the whole experience is a rite of passage. Once you get the degree, it doesn't guarantee you a job anywhere...but it certainly can open doors because you won't be the one without a degree.

I know what you all are saying about universities these days being expensive. Just remember too many of them are stuck with huge bills for technology they shouldn't have bought and buildings they have to maintain/heat/cool. That's all lumped in with the expectation of projected growth and when they can't get enough enrollment, they simply raise the price of admission (tuition). Your best bet is to get through as quick as you can...things aren't going to get any better until institutions stop trying to be something other than a non-profit and drop this whole capitalism approach to education.

Talk about textbooks reminds me of my freshman year sociology class. Professor had weekly reading assignments in the textbook, which was boring as hell...BUT he gave the most interesting lectures on thins that sort of half-way went with the reading material (I guess, I quit reading after the first two weeks when it was obvious he was never going to talk about it, which he never did).

It was a great class...until the final, which was 100% on the assigned book reading and zero percent on the class lectures.

College HOTCHICS ***k and doing so does a lot of good for them...relieves chronic female depression, anxieties, thoughts of inadequacies, etc. So the college chics should indeed s**k your di** to the max - good mutually, for her and you! Win-Win! Feministists may hate that but it's biologically TRUE.

Set a goal. Pursue that goal. Along the way new doors open you never dreamed existed. Adjust course. Go into one of those. = SUCCESS!!!

You're doing it wrong. College was amazing.

Doing it wrong implies I did something wrong. I think if anyone is at fault here it's San Jose State for allowing over 50 students over capacity to attend. It's so slammed that I'm now looking at part-time because full-time without random useless classes is impossible at this point. I have to email some professors tonight as well as see what can be done in regards to taking an internship to get 4-6 credits for FAFSA eligibility.

Or you can get a PT job and party it up like a mother fucker with all this extra time you got.

Thats pretty much the only goal right now: get 6 units for FAFSA coverage, and then just do work for my self-ran company while doing an easy 6 units (making 4 up in winter). Aside from that, it's just an issue of HOW am I going to get the remaining 5 credits I need to attend without going into the dreaded "how about a minor" path that they seem to love to suggest here.

Sure, a minor is helpful.......when it's not adding two more years onto my education that won't be covered by FAFSA.

Enjoy it while ya can, kiddos.

Nobody here said it's tough, I'm not sure where you get "college is tough" from. It's just like DMV: it works, but incredibly inefficient and bureaucratic in nature. My entire issue right now would be solved if SJSU allowed department chairs to add classes or at least seats, but the departments for the time being are punished if they do.

The work I've done in my major so far is definitely a bit too easy and at times I regret not going comp sci due to the lack of any real challenge. I write A papers at 4am the day before, so I'm hardly concerned about the load. This also isn't like community college where you can actually get removed by not attending. I spent so many hours at community college sitting and surfing because the lesson was available online and made more sense from the textbooks perspective.

Yup. I think I'm averaging nearly $700 a semester just in books these days. What a racket.

But, that magic piece of paper opens up doors to job opportunities for the rest of your life, so that's the game we play.

My daughter's books were $1300 this semester! :barf:

What a ripoff!

hah, the college I graduated from constructed a new building for biology students, and the first floor lecture halls had the MOST UNCOMFORTABLE SEATING EVER. It just so happens I had 3 classes in the same lecture hall in a row...
On a related note, the upstairs lab rooms had really great chairs.

transfers were annoying. Some of my classes didn't transfer correctly, probably because I was intending on going to a UC, but ended up going to a CSU
I had to take a "dumbed-down" biology calculus class, even though I'd already taken 2 semesters worth of actual Calculus. I was 30 minutes late for that class once because I couldn't find parking. There was a test that day, and I still got one of the highest scores on it hah.
I also slept a lot in some classes. One of the teachers joked about it.

Anyone who doesn't like college is doing it wrong. It costs a lot of money, but there are drugs and alcohol everywhere, basically everybody is trying to get laid (which makes finding a willing partner very easy), and if you get in trouble, you're given essentially no punishment. Oh, you got wasted, went skinny dipping in the fountain and peed in the quad, and this all happened at noon? Run along and sleep it off you scamp! Beer pong tonight!

Seriously, I was a total nerd in college, and I still had more threeways while enrolled than since... $160,000 well spent!
I never had 3 ways. Hell, I only had 1 two way.

I'm calling shens! No one on ATOT has ever been that fortunate!

Buy your books used.

That's what I did.
You can do that if a used book is available for purchase. I've looked for used books in the past with no luck.

The problem is they change the material in the text books so you need to buy it new.

Also, most students don't want to be seen with a used book. They want to look fresh. New clothes, new iPhone, new books, and a hot car.

pretty much. I worked full time (atleast 40hrs a week) and took at least 12 units per semester the whole time I was in college. When I hear people bitching about how much college sucks I am more often than not amused.

When I graduated and just had to work full time it was a walk in park.

What I really hate are those classes that require you to do all your homework and tests online. Damn teacher barely even lectured at all. What's the point in even going to class?

This semester is looking good, even though this first week has been extraordinarily depressing for some reason. No classes, I get to teach a higher level lab which means less grading, most of my time devoted to research and I had a discovery that's really exciting my advisor. Knowing that I won't finish my PhD until at least 27 and that I'll remain a home-bound virgin for that duration is the only sad part.
