I've been looking for a big (22" or bigger) LCD for photography
and I already know that IPS is great for any print photography jobs

but, what do you know.. the price is so high
even DoubleSight DS-263N is around $700

If I get one of those color correcting device (huey pro, spyder 3), wouldn't those make any LCD (well obviously they should be decent LCD) become good for print photography?
(assuming that, i would still need to get one, if i get an IPS LCD)

or, is there any other big advantage for IPS other than colors?

The short answer is, "cheap" LCD's use TN panels that are not capable of displaying the dynamic range necessary for discriminating photography work. Kinda like clipping in digital photography.

PVA-based panels are pretty good, and may be easier to find and easier on the budget than an IPS LCD.

As far as editing for print goes, the most important aspect regarding color accuracy is color space and calibration between the monitor and output device.

a TN is just not physically capable of what other panel technologies can do.

that being said, i am currently very unhappy with my S-PVA Doublesight monitor - though it may just be I got a defective model

i use it for photography as you can see from my sig.

As others have already said, TN panels are not capable of the color reproduction that PVA/IPS panels are capable of. In addition, the viewing angles of TN panels are worse than PVA and even worse than IPS. This is a big issue for photo editing because one color could be 2 different shades if you're looking at it from two different angles. With an IPS panel, this problem isn't as big. (you need a much sharper angle to get this problem..)

Although, color correction does help even TN panels. They still won't be able to produce all 16.7 million colors of PVA/IPS panels, but atleast the colors they can produce (263k or something like that..) will be more accurate.

Bottom line: You still need a good panel to do photography work. No amount of color correction will turn a TN panel into an IPS panel.

iQ, what exactly is causing your unhappiness with your monitor? I'm curious...

Not being a hardcore gamer, I really like my Acer 20" LCD with a S-IPS panel. 1680x1050 is a tad limiting, though.
