it was horriable in Denver yesterday. The Hayman fire is the largest of 8 forest fires burning in colorado. It will be 100,000 acres burned by tomorrow morning. The Hayman fire is 100 miles SW of my house but its so big there was ash falling at my house the smoke so thick we couldnt see the sun and the smell of burning wood was very thick in the air. The news is reporting the Hayman fire was started by a illegal camp fire. :|:|:|:| stupid ass morons :|

Today the Governor banned the sale and possesion of all fireworks and has banned all open flame in the state.

check out these pictures.
NOAA (The Hayman fire is the one NW of Colorado Springs.)

I could smell the fire here in Colorado Springs last night. Reminded me of the 10 acres that burned right next (as close as 6 feet) to this house like 2 months ago; now that was a shocker.

This is what happens after 80 years of aggressively fighting every fire.
The underbrush builds up and fires that normally run their course without going wild are 100X worse. Add to that the fact that people are living where people have no business living, unless you want your house burned down, and things will continue to get worse. Add some hot and dry and there you go.

No offense, man, but I don't think you know WTF you are talking about at least so far as where people have business living.

Glenwood Springs is not exactly the middle of nowhere.

The smoke in Denver Metro kinda sucks, but what are you going to do about it. From my apartment I can vividly see the smoke and area on fire with my binoculars. If it continues at this pace, thousands of homes will be consumed by the hayman fire. The other fires in colorado are getting a bit out of hand too. I was going to go mountain biking in the national forest friday, but now it is closed to fire hazard. Pretty soon there will be nothing left.

Okay, I'm confused. Where in relation to Denver is the big, major fire?

Also, I heard that 40,000(!) people are being evacuated from their homes. :Q

The Hayman fire is burning approximately 40 miles southwest of downtown Denver. The winds are not as strong today as yesterday-but it's still early. The fire is burning in a northeasterly direction in two branches that could possibly threaten the outer suburbs if it remains out of control.

The AT forums exist because of our appreciation of high tech...but when nature shows its power, even the most modern technology is helpless.

I may have come off as a little calous.
My point was that the combination of suburban sprawl and aggressive fighting of fires have both contributed to the situation in Colorado. My cousin lives there, 50 miles from anything resembling civilization. I'm sure he expects the fire services to come save his house, a house that never should have been built where it was.

It'll only get worse as the human ranks increase and the land mass stay the same.

i was in denver on sunday and it was like being right next to a big campfire. smoke in the eyes and ashes falling from the sky. the sun was obscured by the smoke so it looked like an LED indicator light in the sky. pretty weird.

That may well be, but the Hayman fire near Denver and the one in Glenwood Springs are a lot closer to civilization than your cousin. And fighting fires away from civilization are what rural fire departments are for.

The fact that we had a very, very dry winter contributed more to the fire situation than agressively fighting fires. The fact of the matter is there haven't been that many fires to fight here in the last few years because there has been so much snowmelt.

Well, Mother Nature helped out alittle today and stopped the Hayman Fire's northward progress....we desperately need some rain.

There are a total of 9 wildfires burning in Colorado. About 150,000 acres have been burned (about the size of Chicago). This year 450,000 gallons of fire retardant have been used...more used than all of yr 2000....even though fire season doesn't officially start till June 15th.

Despite this situation, there are still some people here in Denver that is trying to start forest fires in their neighborhoods on purpose.
