Colored spots on monitor - degauss doesn't help - what to do?

I have a Sony 500PS monitor that my friend gave me. It has at least 3 discolored spots on the edges of the monitor caused by him playing with a powerful magnet near the monitor (doh.) Automatic and manual degaussing (via OSD menu) doesn't help. Does anyone know what, if anything, can be done about this? This is a really great monitor but I'd like to fix the spots.

It may be permanent damage. My friend did that to his TV by putting crappy center speaker on top of it. After a week only it developed a colored (pinkish) stripe on the top edge and it never went away.

I'm pretty sure something can be done about it, although it might require taking it somewhere that has a 'degauss magnet' (probably not called that, but whatever.) I seem to remember being told about this many moons ago but I can't remember, so I figured I'd post in the forum and see if anyone could tell me for sure.

The way someone told me is that the aperture grill is bent or coils are damaged or something like that and it's a permanent physical damage, since you can't fix anything inside the tube. I may be wrong though! Hear some other opinions.

I did this to my 36" RCA TV and it went south after a short while, I had to get the chasy replaced. Good luck
