Help!! I have a DVD-RAM drive from 5 years ago that was used to store important data. My new computer case is black, is there a good way to blacken the drive faceplate, better that a majic marker?? Thanks R

"Majic (sic) marker"? Jeez.

Yes; they make spraypaint that can be used on plastics. I believe it's one of the Krylon brands. Just be careful not to get it *in* the drive.

You also might want to try the Cases forum for questions like this.

I've heard Vinyl Dye works well. The only problem is I cant find any in silver, but I'm sure they make it in black. Kyrlon is also good from what I hear. The key to vinyl dye is that it actually "soaks" into the plastic to change the color as opposed to paints which tend to sit on top of the material. You can find them in automotive parts stores I found some in the Dollar Store the other day... but not in silver...
Here's a link for reference: http://linear1.org/mods/vdye.php

I spent days looking for this in silver to no avail. So I ended up painting my drive silver with some automotive paint. The key is to use a very very light coat on light so no to cake the cover with paint. Also you'll want to take the cover off the Disk Driver and paint it seperately in order to get the best results.

You should be able to pop the faceplate off of the drive itself before you paint it, this will save you the problem of potentially getting anything in the drive and thus seriously screwing it up.

That potential was what led me to try the (permanent) Magic Marker, a year ago. It worked so well, I have done it again on another black box, for both floppy drive bezel, and the optical drive. It is very easy, as long as the plastic is halfway clean, and you don't need to worry about overspray at all.
