I live in Columbus, OH and am looking into high speed internet. I used to have road runner from insight cable and that fit my needs fine. I was just wondering if there were any better options i should consider? Should i look for another company, should I go for DSL as opposed to road runner?

Yeah when I had road runner it was great. I was just wondering if there were any better options out there. I really wish they would let you buy your own modem, and not charge you the extra 10.00 a month for it.

$10/month extra? I thought it was just all built into the cost of $44/month. Interesting.

I don't think so, if I remember correctly, they only charge like 34.95 for the road runner and like an extra 10.00 or so a month for renting thier modem. Correct me if I am wrong

In that case I'd go out and buy a cable modem, they're consistently $129, usually $99 and sometimes $49 if you find a hot deal on a cable modem which is compatible with RR.

Assuming your cable modem costs $99, after just 10 months it would pay for itself in the savings.

Ah yes that would be great wouldn't it. That is the problem though, Road runner does not yet allow you to use your own modem.

Pardon my stupidity, I guess that would help, if you know what i do with my internet connection. I like the added speed just so the pages load faster, I do download some stuff, MP3's, porn, games, what have you. So download speed is a plus. I do an occasional online game, but this is not a requirment. I have an extra computer lying around and I wouldn't mine turning it into a mail server or something, maybe run my own site, I don't know.

It used to, but not really anymore. The real cost to the consumer for leasing of the cable modem is pretty small these days (it's only a few bucks with AT&T Broadband). For most people, investing in a cable modem is no longer that big a cost savings (even though $10/mo sounds great, the number is really going downward).

I invested in a cable modem a while back, and it was very worthwhile at the time, but now my current provider won't even allow me to use it. If I hadn't gotten a good deal at the time, I'd be more annoyed right now that it's sitting in the garage gathering dust. I'd sell it in FS/FT but they aren't fetching much these days either!

RR here also. There are not many other options though. They capped the speed not too long ago and I imagine its just a matter of time before they cap the bandwidth to.
