Columbus, OH?

So the recent thread on Nashville/Memphis got me thinking I should post my dilemma here: it looks pretty good that I'm going to be offered a job in Columbus, OH (I live in Nashville currently). I've never even set foot in Ohio and I have to say I've got some pretty negative preconcieved notions about the place.

Anyone living there now that can give me some quality-of-life expectations for Columbus? What's rent like? What's the city like for someone in his mid-20's?

The only really compelling part of this job is the money. Other than that, I'd be fine staying here in Nashville (although I don't particularly love it here either).

I appreciate any thoughts!

Housing costs are a bit lower than what they are in Nashville.

I don't know specifically about C-Bus, but it's not a bad place. They have a number of concerts and some good places to go (mostly around Nationwide arena)

edro13 lives (or lived) there, I believe. He should be able to tell you more.

C-Bus is a pretty good place, college scene is one of the biggest/best in the world. Football season is insane, even on an off year, Buckeye football is like a cult-religion, you either love them to death or your some weird outsider who needs to leave the state before you become a statistic in the next wave of ethnic cleansing.

Lots of great concert venues, youve got that outdoor one (Polaris, but I think they renamed it) Nationwide arena, Value City arena, and sometimes Ohio Stadium, and even on a smaller scale, a great circuit for smaller bands at the local bars.

Lots of great shopping, a decent selection of state and local parks/trails. Besides that i just like the place because i have a lot of Friends/Family down there so i like to visit, usually they always have something fun to take me to, overall I've never had a bad time in Columbus, and never have a hard time finding something to do.

I'm a Columbus Resident. I can honestly say, it's a nice place to live. There are plenty of activities in the area. Of course we have the Blue Jackets. Not exactly lighting up the rankings, but hey you can't be Nationwide Arena for a sports event. And the Buckeyes. Nothing beats Columbus around college football time.

Plenty of attractive young women. Nice areas to live in. Of course like any city you're going to have those not so savory areas. You'll learn quickly where is safe and where isn't.

Rent prices are pretty decent. All kinds of nice homes being built though too. Great food all over. All around good city. If the job and the money is right, come on up. I can be your peronsal tour guide if you like.

Columbus has a lot of people but I can't think of anything, outside of Ohio St., that it's known for.

I used to drive up there a fair amount for work. Seemed rather bland. I'd rather live in Cincy.

great place and if your eventually looking to raise a family here, great public school systems in the suburbs. and the name of the outdoor place is now called Germain Amphitheatre (sp?)

I love Columbus! There is tons to do downtown (Campus, High Street, Brewery District, Nationwide Arena District...) The east and north side is nice too (Polaris Fashion Center, Easton Mall etc)

I don't see myself moving from here anytime soon...

Rent is just like everywhere... high in the nice neighborhoods, and cheap in the ghetto.

It really shouldn't be much different than Nashville, other than the Southern Accent goes away

Oh, and the suburbs are very nice as well... you got Dublin, Worthington, Westerville, Pataskala, Bexley, Hilliard... all very nice places. The only real bad parts of the city are places like close to the fairgrounds (east of it) and the south side (Livingston Ave, Miller/Kelton Ave).

Columbus had over 120 murders last year though

Anyways... I like living here... not to say that you would though. I just wouldn't see why you wouldn't.

Anyone who says it is boring and that there is nothing to do, is a moron.

Can anyone give me a better idea of rent range? I live in a high-rise building right now in a 1-bedroom right in downtown (near the Ryman, if anyone is familiar). What about something comparable?

It really depends on what area you'd be moving to. You should be able to find a nice one-bedroom for around $500, without living in a crappy area of the city. There are some areas that have a higher cost of living, Westerville is one of them. (Westerville has an annoying high local income tax - 1.5%) The apartments around Easton also have a high cost, but are very nice.

ForRent.com can probably help you out. Do you know what part of town you'd be working in?

Just make sure you avoid anything in "Whitehall"

Not sure what part of town it is exactly, but looking at a map, it seems like the office is close to Academy Park?

No idea.

I'd expect to pay in the area of $500, but there aren't so many high rise places in the area. You could possibly pull off a 2 bedroom place with a 15 minute commute into the city for the same price, if it's anything like cincy/dayton.
