A single cable card is capable of supplying up to 6 streams. It's up to the hardware to include necessary tuners for you to have access to them all.

It's not possible to do this with PC hardware anymore, right? Not that it would probably be as seamless as just buying a TiVo and minis.

You can still do it, but Windows Media Center stopped working with Windows 10, at least the last time I read it was dead. Software wise you're limited, but there's other options that aren't Tivo. Personally I was looking for something easy so my wife and kids and pick it up and go, and the Roamio with the Mini's has worked out very nicely. The Bolt is the newer hardware, uses 2.5" drives,versus 3.5" for Roamio, so it's a little more money to upgrade the storage, and it does support 4K where the Roamio doesn't.

More importantly, other than TV none of the other manufactures really delivered units with 6 tuners. SD seemed to abandon the product when MS announced they killed WMC in Win 10 and the one that was relesed by Ceton I didn't hear good things about.

You can blame your county, but counties are creatures of the state, so at the end of the day, the onus will ultimately stop at the state government.

Makes no difference. One can look at their neighboring counties for the same exact cable provider and find things are done differently. From using different equipment to offering different services. I've had to deal with that until I just gave up.

Remember not too many years ago municipalities were starting to offer broadband to their customers? Cable and internet providers stepped in and put a stop to it and I think they even got laws rewritten. It just goes to show you that 'we the people' doesn't work. The people we elect go on to feed off of lobbyist handouts. As many people already pointed out their options for cable is limited to one provider, a monopoly which is not supposed to be legal is thanks to incoming dollars and not votes.

I just don't understand how this kind of thing doesn't infuriate 100% of people. Are we just not getting enough exposure to this kind of bullshit, or are people just that ignorant about what their elected critters are up to?

Kansas tried passing a law banning municipal broadband a couple of years ago. There was an ArsTechnica article on that as well. If I remember right they pulled it after big backlash. But they'll almost certainly try again (or more likely will work to do it at the Federal level now).

Hard to blame people for being ignorant of prospective laws, especially regarding tech. Msm doesn't give much attention to technology cause they don't understand it, and the laws themselves are many times obfuscated to hide the true purpose.

Yep. I use one, and it works fairly well. I think my only complaint is that the phone app doesn't let you play recorded videos unless you're on WiFi. I saw some silly trick on a website about how to make it work on cellular, but it seemed like a lot of hassle for something I wouldn't use too much.

Oh, and as referenced earlier, if you buy a TiVo with lifetime service, it comes with the service. Lifetime service is tied to the hardware, which raises a good point/warning, if the box dies... so goes your service. The only way to get the service carried over to a new box is if you have a warranty and the TiVo dies while under warranty. TiVo's default warranty is only 90 days, so you pretty much either get a garbage guarantee or a decent yet paid one. It's a bit duplicitous in my opinion.

Well, not just that, but plenty of areas have subsidized plans or services for getting cable access. So if you have "poor prices", that's an easy way to make sure a huge chunk of the voting base doesn't care because they get special pricing for the same service.

HBO GO requires your cable company to support it. Essentially, HBO needs to be able to tie into your cable account to verify that you have an active HBO subscription.

I've been with DirecTV for years and have similar stories about them nickling and diming customers to increase their revenues. My wife and I have discussed this. We're going to cut them off soon. We cut out internet at home a few years back from Charter after they jacked the rates up to $60/month from $35-40... The point is, we didn't use it enough that we thought $60/month was worth it. We almost feel the same way about TV....but I keep convincing myself that if I watch older movies I didn't pay to see in the theater 2-3 years ago, at $10-15 each, I only have to watch 4-5/month to justify the cost. I think we're going to cut them off for 6 months minimum and maybe try to go a year to save over $1000.

Without high speed internet to stream and 2 kids....it'll be interesting to see how long this lasts.
