Hmmm... My dad pays CDN $38/month for 4100/800 kbit cable service (althought that includes savings for a 12 month agreement and using the cable TV service). Paying > USD $100/month for internet access is insanity!

Bull sh*t if you ask me, but what can I do. I love it. It's so fast and I can't imagine going back to dialup. DL takes literally seconds. I can DL patches for my games within seconds. On dialup it would take me an hour.

Why don't you sign up for their BASIC package that cost like $7-15 a month and get the discount?

$7-15 per month? I've never seen cable for that cheap. The only thing that has come close is that Comcast was offering 3 months free if you got the cable installed by that particular deadline. But you had to have tv (cable) and since I don't have a tv I'm not eligible.

I've tried to get it for cheap but have been unsucessful. We do have Version DSL in my area and that would run me about $30-35 per month but cable kicks DSL ass. Also, I'm a big online gamer and I've heard that cable is much better for gaming online.

BTW, where did you see the $7-15 per month?

I hope the Canadian companies don't go the same way the US ones have. Currently you can get perfectly fast (not sure of the actual numbers) cable for about $45 CDN (~$35 US).

theres no way I'd pay $50 for internet access. Fortunately my parents want me to concentrate on my studies and they pay for all expenses

I hope they don't disconnect me for downloading 185 gigs last month

You have to spend a couple minutes talk to them and tell them you want the very basic channels, which means just the local channels. They'll say it doesn't exist, blah blah blah, etc. but stay on the li ne and say you want the local channel. I don't remember the exact reason but I remember someone telling me they are required to provide it. For my home it's about $11.

Up the road from me you can go with Mcleod cable internet. They have a 128/64 capped cable connection for $25 and a 3mb/256 connection for $45. If they would bump up that low end connection to like 500k/128k it would be an awesome service.

Hmmm... Comcast is increasing the rate? Lucky I called in couple weeks ago and got $29.99 a month for the next year. At least give me another year of "affordable Internet service".

I think it's bullsh1t that I'm the only one I know who got their "free" cable cut off while everyone else I know is still getting the free cable deal :|

You know what I'm talking about....get Cable Internet and you get pretty much free basic cable...

The 10 people I know, including myself who has Comcast service, I'm the only one they cut off :| So now All I get is basic, basic (local channels), while all my friends still get free basic (cnn, discovery, mtv, usa...etc)

Other than that...I can't complain. Back in the day my server would get cut off every other day, but it seems to be stable for a year now

Well now, that is just a silly thing to say. I'd rather have my balls removed than go back to dialup.

So are you gonna go a pair or go back to dialup?

The latest letter I have says we were on the shared billing plan (get discounts for cable tv) even though we don't pay for TV. As far as I know, we have never paid for TV and never got any discount for that, we were always charged for the normal Internet only plan. I am calling Comcast now to disconnect... I would rather go back to dialup then pay $53/month for broadband. Stupid bloodsuckers.

You live in Irving IIRC? Call up SBC or Verizon - it's about $30/35 for 1500/128 on Verizon and probably $26.95 for the same thing with SBC (one year) - they both service the whole DFW metroplex I think.

Already been through that. Something wrong with the lines in my block. They want me to pay to fix it. I went up to the VP to plead my case (since people on the other side of the street can get DSL no problem), but he denied it. Said it would cost them too much and there was no demand, they wanted me to pay $7000. To my knowledge, people on my side have either chosen cable or satellite. I am contemplating signing up with Everyone's Internet at $10 a month. Actually from a financial standpoint it's gonna be a good thing. Just have to get used to slower downloads again.

Hahahaha!! I know what you mean.
I had cable teevee and cable internet. So, I got a discount for cable internet. When I canceled the cable teevee, they forgot to take away my discount.

but i have been using cable internet since it was $30.00 a month for 3MB down and 2MB up. it is now doubled and they just raised my caps, so I will not complain.

I would not give it up for anything!

edit:
your mad!

$59 a month is a lot for net access.

I'm glad mine is £25 a month.

ummm...

25.00 GBP United Kingdom Pounds = 45.7205 USD United States Dollars
Not a HUGE difference considering $7.28 is not as hard to come by for us as 3.98GBP is for brits

we pay $45/mo for cable internet (plus $20 for the basic basic cable... we can't get tv otherwise. heh.. we're in a reception hole). that includes a modem rental.

I would drop to DSL... $30 from verizon.. save $15/mo... but... we're 18000ft away... they JUST got it available in our area... and neighbors that have it, say it's no faster than dial up for them......

Just wanted to clarify the reason I am disconnecting is because they have raised rates 3 times in the last year. When I orginally signed up about 18 months ago, it was $39.99 a month. That's a 50% hike in less than 2 years. What's it going to be in 2 more? Honestly if they offered a cheaper account with less bandwidth, say 1mb/256k then I would pay them $25 a month for it. Alas, they don't have a cheaper option I love the Internet but I don't do huge downloads anymore, so the one size fits all model Comcast is using doesn't fit my needs. I am gonna call the telcos again and hope they have decided to fix my lines and offer DSL (please please please). $26 a month sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Make your cable companies duke it out in a no-holds-barred Texas deathmatch. I was a TimeWarner customer, I called them up and told them that WOW was going to give me a package better than the one I had for $20 less a month. Instant price break. Eventually, I called up WOW and asked if they would do their faster package with more IPs for what I was giving TW, and they reluctantly agreed. So, I'm now paying $60 a month for 4Mbit down cable and the 70-80ish channel analog cable, with 3 IP's.

My parents, however, live in a Cox-only zone. They pay I think $45 a month just for 2Mbit down cable modem service. Competition rocks!

Ahh ok. ev1.net was pretty good to me for 3 years.....the best 56k service I've used. Thumbs up from me
