Comcast, does it work to call and threaten to cancel service to continue the promotional rate?

It may not always work. My parents called to cancel because they were going to have FIOS installed, and the guy on the phone didn't even try to stop them from canceling.
And they were paying over $150/mo for internet + TV.

Can't hurt to try, worst they can say is "No." I don't have Comcast in my area, but I've pulled this trick with Charter a couple times already...I honestly don't care who I get my internet from and I don't need the cable channels, so if they say "No" I'll just dump em...

Former employee says: threaten to go to Dish. Don't make it too obvious, young college kids are quite transparent when they try to be slick over the phone. Make sure you mention Dish.

Oh and don't say what you want. Say you want to disconnect. You are automatically transferred to retention. They will ask why. Say Dish has some great deals. They will see your promotion is running out, let THEM offer YOU something

works better if u just ask them for the promotional service. you'll probably go farther being nice to the CSR than by being rude

In my experience you have a wait a couple months before getting a new promotion and it varies by rep. Some just say no, some will dig through the system and try to find a promo the system will let them apply.

Wrong. CSRs are generally not allowed to extend promotions. Only retention has that power, and the keyword that gets you the best deal is "Dish."

You have a few different departments:

Sales: Lowest trained below Billing. Maybe if they make a mistake you'll get a deal, but generally deals only apply to new customers. Extensions are ruled out.

Repair: Same as Sales except they have troubleshooting training.

Retention: When you say "disconnect" we are told to transfer you there. When you say "Dish" they are told to do whatever possible to retain you.

And a former customer says: what you say is generally true BUT you lose nothing and can gain some good info by being nice to the initial CSR. I've been a Comcast customer in three different states over the last 8years and have almost always had some sort of promotion. I've had some CSRs that looked up their current promotions for me before they transfered me to retention and one told me to call back later in the month since they would be more keen to keep their numbers.

Working in a call center is a crappy boring job, it's amazing what some simple chit chat about the weather where they are and things like that will get you. They always ask for your name and use it, remember to use their's too.

Time Warner is no problem. Call, ask get a new deal. Don't know about Comcast though. Just try and ask. Say you've been looking around and you feel your monthly fee is too high compared to others and you're wondering if there's any deals you can take advantage of. Don't be an ass because your measly monthly fee means nothing to them when they have hundreds of thousands of customers.

Does "DSL" work the same as "Dish" if you only have internet service thru them?

YMMV. I called to cancel once and was put through to someone who gave me crazy rates to stay on... that was years ago though. You could also get a free month out of them if there was ever any interruption of service that was not bill related...

I would assume "DSL" works the same because in the broadband market they were our direct competition and I imagine they are treated the same as Dish. The Dish competition s really brutal though.. they used to offer employees $100 if you got someone to switch in your off-time.

And to reply to what someone said about being nice to CSRs.. I'm not disputing that. I don't see why one would be mean to them in the first place. I'm just saying they are generally not allowed to extend promotions so they aren't your best source of help in this matter.

when you say "Dish" do you mean Dish Network? Or will saying "Direct TV" have the same result?

I called TW up, telling them that I was strongly considering going to Dish/DSL because of their prices.

The rep told me flatly, "I can have your service cancelled immediately, if you want."
