Comcast doubled my speed.

Here's a somewhat related question.

I'm on Time Warner Cable in TX. When I run speedtest.net, I get like 24mbit down.

However, when I d/l stuff, it maxes out at like 1.2MByte which would indicate it's only getting around 10mbit.

My question is, why would speedtest show 24Mbit while my d/ls indicate 10Mbit?

Here's something strange. Since Comcast instituted the 250 cap I have taken a screen shot of every months usage, never exceeding the cap.
Today I checked and Comcast changed my previous 3 months usage to show I substantially exceeded the cap each month.
wtf

Have you tried this link instead:

www.ookla.com/speedtest ?

The big difference between that and speedtest.com are the servers. The closest server to me on speedtest.com is in Nashville and it's a Comcast server. At one point, my connection was having some major issues, and speedtest.com showed everything was fine. The Ookla link did not, because it actually went outside Comcast's network.

In other words, speedtest.net may only be working internally.

Also, the source of your download may just be slow. I have about the same speed as you, and some of my stuff downloads at about 1.5MB/s. Some sites such as Microsoft or nVidia can provide the full 3MB/s+ though.

From the responses in this thread it looks like it covered a lot of area. Hopefully you will get it soon.

Thanks for reminding me to reboot - I had heard the radio commercials a few weeks back. (I'm in the greater Boston area.) Roughly 60 down/10 up. Awesome.

I get the same wacky results from the xfinity speed test.
I find that speedtest.net is best, at least for where I am.
I like to do my tests either very late in the evening or very early in the morning so I don't hit traffic.

Found the Xfinity speed test....this is what I got:

Sort of matches my latest Speedtest.net test:

In any event, looks like my upload speed finally caught up.

Interesting... I have a Cisco CM100 modem. I think it is only Docsis 2. I need to look at getting a new modem.

Not in the MD area.
Several business accounts test ridiculously high approaching 100mbps down and over 22 up. FTP transfers show about 30 down and 11 up sustained. I don't trust speedtest.net results on Comcast because of this.

Residential accounts do in fact have a 250GB cap. It's not a hard cap and as a matter of fact before you get that nasty gram you often have to exceed it by a lot over several months.

They are transitioning to a new model with a 300GB cap. That one will be a hard cap. Once you hit that you pay for overage.
maybe this will convince you there is no cap right now for residential

Curious, was everyone who saw a speed increase an Xfinity customer? Or did anyone with normal plans get a speed increase as well?

My speed went from 15Mb to 20Mb recently. However, my bill also climbed 19%. I can get 40Mb internet, same Digital TV service, plus telephone for only $8 more per month from a competitor so I'm switching.

Waiting on my Motorola SB6121 from Amazon so I can get upgraded to docsis 3.0 and stop paying $7/month for modem rental.

Is there any way to tell if your area is Docsis 3.0? We are labeled Xfinity but not sure if that is enough to determine it or not.

I had my Internet flake out on my last night, but when I looked at my modem, I noticed that both the downlink and uplink lights were flashing in unison. I was pretty certain that was the indication that the modem was performing a firmware upgrade. When my Internet finally came back, I noticed that both my downlink and uplink lights were blue (DOCSIS 3.0) instead of only the downlink being blue (uplink was still DOCSIS 2.0).

I ran a speedtest and I got 72Mbps/10Mbps where I used to get 35Mbps/5Mbps. So, they doubled my speed last night.
