Comcast gives me a headache

Moved to a new area where Comcast is the service provider, it shouldn't be that hard to get internet and tv or should it? Went to a wi-fi hot spot and signed up for there Blast Plus! promotion, $49.99/mo for 6 mos of service which includes 50mb down and 10mb up internet and there digital economy tv which includes 45 channels or so. After 6 mos, price jumps to $69.99 for mos 7-12 then to $94.99 for years 2 onward.

Online it does not give you an option for self-install, there is an automatic $30 charge for a tech to come out and install the service. Comcast also charges $7/mo for a modem rental fee.

After i signed up, had to call into customer service to have them change from a truck roll to self-install.

When i go down to pick up the modem, the only one available is this huge Arris TG862G modem with built in wi-fi, phone ports and battery. It's 10" tall and 8" wide. They do not have any other docsis 3.0 modems at the payment center, so i accept it.

Then they get the cable box, the one they bring out is a Motorola DCT700 which has no hdmi ports, it was all beat up, looks like someone flung it out the window. If i wanted a digital cable box with hdmi that would an extra $10/month. No fucking thank you, so i accept it.

After hooking everything up, the speed is great, but there built-in wifi sucks, literally dropped connection every 5 minutes. Called into tech support to put the modem into bridge mode.. the response i get is what do you mean. They have no clue or won't do it. Only option is log into the interface myself and turn off wi-fi.

Hooked up the cable box with composite RCA cables, the picture looked like crap. Tried to bypass the box and of course all the channels are scrambled.

About 10 days goes by and i get my first online bill, its $182.99.. immediately call into customer service who tells me i am being billed $69.99/mo for the blast plus, $7 for modem rental fee and $100 service install fee.

They have no record of me signing up online for the $49.99/mo package even though i have a screenshot to prove otherwise.

I give them the account number and they cannot find any record of it. The account number the rep gives me back is completely different as well. They finally removed the $100 install charge but won't correct the $69.99 service fee.

Trying real hard not to lose my cool, hang up, go online and find for $14.99/mo i can get basic cable tv and for $24.99/mo i can get performance internet for 6 mos, 20mb down, still not bad.

Found a used Thomson RCA DCM425 modem on craigslist for $10 bux. Back down the payment center i go, return there modem and cable box. They give me a Digital Tuning Adapter (DTA), a basic pass though box to describable the picture. Doesn't have rca or hdmi hookups. Then i call tech support from the payment center to add my rca modem mac id to my account.

Comcast will only add approved modems from there website, so don't buy one that's not listed.
http://mydeviceinfo.comcast.net/

Back home, my purchased modem been working fine 2 weeks later and the tv picture looks fine.

I'm not paying $7/mo for a modem rental fee and $10/mo for an hdmi cable box, that's just insane. My monthly bill is now $39.98+tax, not too bad.

Prices for existing customers is less than price for new customer's. The trick is after your promotion is over is to speak to there retention dept, not customer service or billing who will let you keep the price the same. if you threaten to cancel.

I'm only getting 20 channels or so, which is fine, don't care about movie channels.

Don't know why Comcast makes life so hard for it's customer's, but they really need to get there head out of there ass.

Because they design it for people who don't know shit about electronics or technology. The kind of people who just "plug it in and turn it on". They don't care WTF HDMI is or how their modem works.

Yep Comcast is the Devil. I went with an HTPC and cable card tuner to get rid of their crappy and expensive HD DVR. Works pretty well and your first cable card is free.

Yazoo, I know your post was basically a rant (which I'm OK with ), but were you able to bridge the Arris yourself? I called to get a Docsis 3 modem to get the speed tier I was paying for. I took my old one down and got the exact model you did. I would love to be able to bridge it myself but everything I've read says it must be done by Comcast from their end.

I went from a Buffalo b/g modem to this and the wireless which was rock solid with the Buffalo is, I hate to say it, rock solid with this box. But I would like to put in place my newly purchased N router with DD-WRT or Tomato on it.

Comcast is hell to work with. Even their business class can be bad to work with. Their gateway is horrible too. Thankfully I got them to let me use my own sb6121.

You can't order from these bozo's online. The system is broken to shit.

What you need to do is order over the phone, then complain.

I just got the same deal; except my internet is $30 a month w/ no rental fee because I had already had a modem.

I also set up TV... though I don't comprehend why we need TV when we have the internet. Local news? Sports casts?

Also, their TV deals suck. direct tv is a much better deal.

I have their starter business internet package. It runs out in august and I won't renew I will just bundle residential cable with internet. I am using the sb6120 too that I bought. I'm hoping that I can use that one on residential service too. Their business class support is better than residential as far as I can tell.

I have 2 accounts residential cable is $70 a month and business internet is $59. Hoping when I cancel the business internet I can bundle residential internet with my current cable package. Their appointment system is messed up too and I have to take off work because they won't come out on weekends. I need to line up the dates when my business internet contract ends so that I'm not stuck without internet for days.

Every time I move I have to call them no less than 10 times because of technical and billing issues. I've never had a problem solved with the first call. The billing people leave "notes" in the account that don't get followed up on and the tech people are incapable of solving a problem that isn't pre-scripted for them.

Same here. Last time I moved they said I owed a modem. Which was not true since the tech guy who came to do the install also took the old modem with him. Well he forgot to scan it in when he arrived at the office and they charged me for it.

It was a pain calling every time and then describing the issue over and over again. They checked their inventory and I was lucky they found the damn thing or else I would have had to pay for it.

I wish they had fios where I live in my complex I would like trying it but it's not possible as Comcast owns the whole area here.

I cancelled cable TV recently only keeping internet. Soon after I got a letter saying Comcast has erroneously not been charging me $7.00 a month for modem rental and the charge would appear on my next bill.

I own my on modem and have never leased a modem from them. I call and the lady said you need to send us a receipt showing that I did purchase and own my modem. I said BS every time I picked up a tv box I had to sign a receipt that had an ID # on it identifying the equipment issued to me. If comcast is going to charge me for a modem rental I need a copy of the receipt I signed when the modem was issued to me. After silence and her tapping on her keyboard she says it does look like you own your modem and I will correct your account.

I just had to help someone with a similar set up. Comcast sent them a new modem out of the blue, the client wanted to continue to use their Airport Base Station because they were familiar with that. I can't believe the firmware in that box won't let you put it in bridge mode without a call to Comcast.

However, I was luckier than you. I went with their online support chat option, told the person what I wanted to do, they put it in bridge mode remotely. After restarting everything it worked fine.

Never had any issues with Comcast/Xfinity with TV nor internet.

pretty much all ISPs charge 5-10/month for the modem from them

TWC was 5 and they raised it to 10 last year

That's why I just buy my own. Pays for itself in the long run.

i'd love to see how much profit they make adding incorrect charges and people letting it slide once or twice or just letting it go out of frustration (applies to all telecoms)
