Just called Comcast. The guy won't give me any promotion saying I just had one. He told me to wait another two months to get a promotion. Something about waiting 90 days until able to get another promotion. No promotion after promotion.

UPDATE: LOL
I called again and got a young lady this time. She told me the offer is only for new people who switch from DSL to Comcast. I was able to hang up and said, "if I only I had known before. I would have hold off and get this deal." She then said, since you are with us for a while and a long time customer, I will honor you with this deal. WOW! I took it, I will check the bill next month and see did it really happen.

Don't hurt being nice.

Ok, so to sum this up, correct me if Im wrong.
If you are in the bay area and have dsl, you can switch to the $29.99 cable modem internet deal described by the OP....
Correct?

Correct ... that's what my rep told me. I'd call them (Comcast) up to double check. I'm not sure how they verify whether you're a DSL customer or not.

Any better deals if you combine cable tv? My SBC DSL contract expired last month so i'm ready to switch...would this comcast deal be for the 3mbit/s and for one year?
Do they cap at 150GB a month?

//krunk (^_^x)

you should read broadbandreports because someone who said they downloaded 60-65gig said they were cancel because they downloaded "too much".
Also there was an article saying comcast claims unlimited means no per minute charge not bandwidth.
Cox Cable has a cap of 30gig per month.

like i said, this is my personal experience. and i've downloaded that much. unless, ur reply was just to doubt my report. reading reports of ppl getting cancelled doesn't mean i'm getting cancelled too.

Is it better to buy the cable modem?

What is the best deal on purchasing a good modem?

Best Buy has a motorola modem on sale this week that's free after rebates. I've heard nothing but good things about it. I forget the model number but it's in the store ad for this week.

No luck in Minneapolis MN. The guy I talked to said it was "Promotional" and for new customers only.

Mawashi, their caps aren't explicit, but rumor is they are as low as 60gb a month. Look at the Comcast threads on DSL reports.

Comcast SUCKS!

I went in for the $20 for 6 months deal when I moved to Burlingame CA. mid last year. As soon as the promotion was over they bumped up our monthly to $60 per month since we didn't want to have cable TV. Ridiculous! I wonder if they are offering this now because of the fallout of customers (how many techno/genx/generation watch much TV anymore?).

I cancled my plan and went for SBC DSL. I'm happy with it, it's stable, it works. Although I don't get 600K d/l times, what I'm getting for $27 is good enough.

Another thing, I really did not like comcast cable. It wasn't really stable, every so often I'd have to reset the modem when I rarely had to do it when I had SBC DSL a my old place. Another problem is if you are using file sharing programs (Bittorrent, etc.), I couldn't connect to as many peers with Comcast (and yes I opened up my ports on my firewall). No problems with DSL, just the U/L speed sucks... Oh well, I guess I have to be a leach for the time being...

FYI, people in apartments that have free cable (apartment bulk plan) cannot get this deal.

this was specifically stated in every promotion they have. in fact their promotions have never stopped, just that it wasnt available to current subscribers. that's why my roommate and i usually trade off (whenever the promotion ends, either 6months, 3months so far)

Heya krunk!
Do they let you get the promotions even if you've taken advantage of a previous promotion?

Yeah, I was thinking about doing that with my girlfriend. Do the switch... But I was really fed up with Comcast cable for many reasons. First it stinks if you want to do file sharing (the cap, having problems connecting to peers, unlike SBC DSL), my connection was unreliable (often drops forcing a modem reset), and then I couldn't setup a VPN to my computer (the IP range they distribute is not public).

i believe there's a 60day wait time. 60 days after u've stopped using their service, you can sign up for a new promotion. if you don't want to wait that 60 days, someone else in your household can sign up and u guys can just swap back and forth since most promotional prices last over 2 months.

The newsgroups service makes it all worth it though

(I'll trade you, )

Try paying $55/mo for 256k dsl, with the following features:

-$200 Modem (you have to buy)
-$75 Setup Fees!
-Bad routing/lantency!
-Unstability!
-Oversold!
-Random Disconnections!
-Disconnections after 1 hour of inactivity to a log-in prompt!
-ICMP Packets Disabled!
-A staggering large, 7mbit coming into the main data-center for all of it's customers!

Try going through that. :|

lol, didnt even realize it was u! yah. as long as they have promotions, u can continue switching. it's always a good idea to setup an appointment first before u cancel. depding on the csr you get, some are nice just to give you the promo when you say that. others like to give you a hard time and force you to cancel and then resign up which then they are required to send a technician to your place to help setup your cable internet. we were stupid the 1st time and were internetless for 3 weeks. cancel a few days before your appointment is what i suggest.

From what I remember, they don't cap your cable modem, it's your line. But I could be wrong.

Ok there's 2 differant caps here. One is the giggage. Comcast has invisible cap where if you download more than 100 or 200 gigs a month (exact value unknown they wont say what the cap is), they will terminate your service. You cannot get around this.

Second cap, the bit per second download rate. From what I understand Comcast caps at 3mbits for most customers. Its possible to get around a cable cap if you have certain special cable modems AND certain special ISP's that haven't configured their networks properly (Just the modem is NOT enough). I dont know what ISP's since I've never tried to do this for severals reasons, the LEAST of which is that its DANG risky. I kinda doubt comcast has thier network configured wrong, they would have spotted people uncapping long before now and fixed it.

Here's the risks you take: First its really easy to spot someone d/ling at 10mbits on the network when the norm is 3mbit, they find it out real easy to terminate your service and stop you from ever using it again. Thats the smallest risk. The larger risk is that FBI has taken to raiding uncappers, here's a link that contains info and link to the news story:
http://www.broadbandreports.com/shownews/23727
Dont ask me how thier estimate of $250,000 in lost bandwidth was conviently the exact amount the FBI needs before it investigates computer crimes. It was a huge over-reaction if you ask me. But its there and the precedent has been set. If you are uncapping with shady software like the uncapping hacked firmware crap from that link you posted, I imagine you also have "backup" copies of music, games, and movies on your computer. I dont think you'd want the FBI taking a look through there and finding it, especially as the RIAA has said they can hit you for what was it... $150,000 per song copied?

Anyway, I really dont think its a good idea to go uncapping. Especially when SBC DSL has 6mbit download for $45 a month and uncapping gives you at most 10mbit (10mbit is absolute maximum because almost all cable/dsl modems are 10mbit network hardware on the ethernet side) But its your life.
