I have a D-link 602/604 router, and it didn't seem to want to work at first with my moto sb4200.
After visiting D-link's support site, I found that the 700 and 800 series also had a problem with ISP's like comcast. The fix was to unplug the router, then the modem, then plug in the modem, let in run through BIT ("Built In Test": when you plug it in, and it tests itself, one light coming on at a time from top to bottom representing the steps of the testing). After modem clears BIT, plug in router, and WALLA... Fixeepooed. Might be required to reset our connections to get us the 256k. =)

And yes... Fixeepooed is a word. =P

Just an update on the why....

I just got off the phone with a contact I have at Comcast that is in the know. He is a gamer and I know him and what he does for Comcast, so this is reliable. A large reason they increased the upload cap and the price is due to the merger with AT&T. They were bringing the two services in line with each other. AT&T customers already had a 256 upload cap so it would not be desirable to bring them down to the Comcast 128 cap (ala the @home fiasco). Along with the higher AT&T upload cap came the slightly higher AT&T base rate of service though. He also told me that although they say the cap is 1.5 down actually it is 1.8. To get the higher uplaod rate they changed the modulation from 1.6 to 3.2 which is suppose to be cleaner too.

All this doesn't mean beans to me cause I am on the Pro Service which according to him is not likely to change untill DOCSIS 2.0 rolls out. They are wanting to eventually make available services that are syncranous, but due to compression/modulation in current DOCSIS and fears of quality of service going down they can't do it.

This site talks about DOCSIS and other Cable standards. > linky

Check this :
DOCSIS 2.0 is backward compatible with earlier versions of DOCSIS products, fully supporting advanced Internet Protocol (IP)-based cable services. It adds advanced digital modulation capabilities to cable modems and headend equipment enabling cable companies to increase by a factor of three the speed of the return (or upstream) path of their networks as compared to DOCSIS 1.1, or a factor of six as compared to DOCSIS 1.0.

I like how these aholes are trying to force cable TV down your throat. They'll have to pry my satellite dish from my dead hands before I ever go back to cable tv.

Guys, don't you know better then to tell them that your router is being used?

My conversation goes like this:

Me: I'm having problems connecting out to the internet. I can't seem to get an IP address.
Tech Rep: Are you using a router?
Me: I use one normally, but I disconnected it to trouble-shoot this problem. I am currently hooked directly up to my computer.
Tech Rep: Can you please reboot your computer.
Me: Sure thing. *unplugs router, then plugs it back in*
Tech Rep: Ok, I see you system now, looks like we have a problem with our DHCP server. Give me a two minutes to fix it then reboot again.
Me: Sure thing. *waits 2 minutes, unplugs router, plugs it back in* I just got an IP address. Thanks.
Tech Rep: Thanks for calling. If you still have any problems reguarding this problem please reference this ticket number xxxxxx. Have a nice day.

Seriously, the only way they can tell if its a router or not it to do a lookup on the MAC address allocation tables of what company can use what MAC addresses. And even then, D-Link, Linksys, and many other manufacturers make both routers and NICs so there is no way they can tell if you are using a router or a NIC, that is unless you tell them.

I don't, but I'm usually on the phone after someone else has already spoken to them. I've given up on calling them when theres a problem, they're pretty clueless anyway.

It's nice to see some companies are lifting the bandwidth throttle on the upload stream these days. I wish it was the same story for Charter. =/

I don't really like the 3COM and the RCA often seem to have problems. We don't see many Dlink or Linksys but they seem to work alright. Toshiba's rank right up there with the RCA in the suck category. Com21 are good but ugly. Just my opinions.

[EDIT] BTW I'm probably going to get a Linksys modem soon since I have a Linksys router and the stacking option is great. If I didn't have the router I would deffinetly go with one of the Motorola models, especially since in my area Circuit City is giving them away with activation.

Exactly my observation - the Motorola rulz. And some people claim it can be "uncapped", which would give you higher speed. Not sure I need that, because at 1.7Mbps down I am already faster than most corporate accesses (1.5Mbps for a T1). Anyhow - I also see the RCA modems crap out a lot, in particular in areas that are further away from the main line, the Motorolas seem to hold the the signal better. Also good are the Webstar modems recently deployed by comcast. I think that the stacking is overrated - I just paced my Motorola sideways on top of my router, not esthetically 100% but very functional and reliable .

Not sure who to direct this to specifically, but I see some asking about it above..... Yes, you CAN "uncap" a cable modem. A very close friend of mine did it AND WAS COUGHT within two days of using it. This is not urban legend. I had the stuff to do it but was smart and let my buddy check it out first. lol, good thing. He wasn't even being nuts about it. He only pushed it to like 5mb down and 2mb up. I can't vouch for all services and in all areas, but Comcast in my area will nail you for it.

I won't get specific about doing it, but for those that will attempt to come back and say it can't be done... it involves a tftp client. In other words all modems recieve a config of sorts from the cable company that caps your service.... what you are doing is preventing their config and using your own. O' his was a Motorola Surfboard but I believe it would work on any cause the config has to get into it from the cable company somehow so obviously all of them can have a config written to them.

My buddy got a very FIRM warning over the deal and well it was especially funny cause one of the local Comcast guys was at one of our game events and was standing 5' from the guy he busted for it earlier that week. It was just priceless....

No i do not have the stuff anymore, no i will not tell you how (then you will yell at me when they cut you off), no you shouldn't do it, no it was not some simple .exe file you download or registry setting.

I also agree with Fallen Kell. Don't tell them anything about your router. Reset router = reboot computer, unless you don't know what your doing with your router. lol

LINKY for those interested parties who wish to lose their broadband service and have the FBI come to their houses...

Just as a note- I did poke around with these tools for a bit, and learned many interesting things about my provider's cable plant ( Such As: it was giving my modem a MaxCPE of 7, meaning i could legitimately pull 7 ip addresses.. that was worth finding out about )

EDIT: DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES BREAK ANY LAW USING THIS INFORMATION. I DIDN'T, AND YOU SHOULDN'T.

I'm also using attbi 1.5Mbps/256Kbps.

Currently my news server is provided by AT&T with unlimited d/l. Is it true that Comcast doesn't have it's own news servers? And that you have to sign up with Giganews with free 1Gig per month LIMIT???? That is not HOT DEAL at all!!!

If after the comcast transition I lose my unlimited newsgroup download, I will be VERY PISSED!!!

Not only is it just 1 gig of newsgroup downloads a month, that also includes headers. You can shoot your wad just looking at one of the big Mp3 groups before you even do any downloading. Comcast blows. I miss @Home!

Well... Since Comcast is taking over the news servers from AT&T Broadband, couldn't they just integrate those servers to provide all of us free UNLIMITED newsgroups, just like what we are having before???????

If they take out the unlimited news service, I will be forced to switch!!! It is the main reason I am using broadband service!!! Unlimited fast binaries!
