They don't pay Nik the bigbucks for nothin! He PMed me saying he assumed I'd already powered the modem down and up. I had not. I just did and over 150 pings my average to gateway has dropped to 44 with a packet loss of 0%. We'll see if it stays like this or deteriorate again. Thanks, niky

Do you work for comcast? Or Newcom the real tech support behind Comcast.net

<< My ip starts with 68.81.... so I've changed over, right? So why am I getting the same ip addy everytime i reboot when it's more than 5 x 4day periods Also, yes I expect the email and webspace and newsgroups to work. Anything less should prompt a call about it. >>

True, while offering something that doesn't work isn't good business practice (or legal in some cases), news and email are easily accessible some place else. If I had Comcast, I wouldn't worry about either through them because I know there are more serious issues out there trying to get fixed. I wouldn't waste the tech's time with a petty thing that I don't live on. And a service that is advertised as entertainment and has a user agreement saying that "entertainment" is all it is, how can you expect anything serious out of the company? Anyway, if you get a 68.x.x.x address, you have changed over. Everybody has. Anyway, lemme give you an example. 1st 4-day period's IP: 68.124.21.113 2nd 4-day period's IP: 68.124.50.96 3rd 4-day period's IP: 68.124.50.50 4th 4-day period's IP: 68.48.2.221 Rebooting doesn't do anything other than release and renew your IP -which we assign to you. You can reboot all you want. It's not TRUE DHCP (as in, you get a new IP every time you reboot). You can reboot until you're blue in the face and you'll get the same IP for four days. See... they're all different, but some times can be similar (subnets, etc). If you're really that concerned, check the whole IP, write it down, and check again periodically to see if it changes. When it does change, note the difference, write down the new one and start over again. Try it for several weeks. Don't worry, dude; it's all good. nik

I don't think you understand what I'm asking. Read the following sentence carefully:

I have had the same IP address for 21 days or more.

or try this one:

For 21 days or more, each time I've examined my IP address, it has remain unchanged.

I also have had the same IP ever since Comcast switched me over. I use PCAnywhere, and have never had to change the IP in the config. So it is not a 4 day thing... And it is a good thing, or my PCA wouldn't work too well.

Youre losing packets like Mothers Against Drunk Driving? There is only one solution for this - boycott China.

<< Buck up and pay for a T-1 >>

<mouth watering> mmmm T-1

I wish T-1 was truly worth it. I thought it was around $500/month for 1.5 down and something like 768 up, but I am not entirely sure. I think most of the price is for the installation/service that you can get on call in case you have down time and need to be reimbursed (if you are a business).

I REALLY wish I had $700 or however much it costs for T-3 because I know that I would surely take advantage of that.

*note to self* find a way to mod my cable modem to allow for T-3 down/up streams, bypass electrical laws of physics if necessary

i would think that he would know how long the dhcp lease is for, considering he works there.

and just because your lease expires/renews, doesnt mean your ip changes. it can, but it doesnt always (for most people on cable, it rarely does)

We were one of the first people(late Dec.) to be switched over here in Dearborn. For 3 weeks my connection sucked worst then when I had a 14.4 dial up. Then one day they figured it out and my connection is back to normal. email has seldom been a problem. As of last week I've gotten access to 7 email addy's and web space.

I still would like to try out other broadband options but I'm 20,000ft. from the teleco.

I have comcast and my pings have dropped way down since the switch. @home really sucked here in N. Virginia ( at least where I am) and I was ready to drop them until the switch took place. Now my pings playing UT or CS are always around 60 as opposed to 200 with @home

Live in Alabama - I feel kinda silly cause I think that Nik's advice to reboot the modem itself has helped massively

I am getting the exact same thing with my Comcast cable!!! I keep losing packets. I've been trying to play WC3 and I can't even stay connected to the server because it keeps loosing packets. I have to refresh pages several times to get them do display completely also. Not only that but it's slow as hell. I have been getting really bad pings on some sites(sites that weren't that bad before) though some are normal. Also i've only been getting at most 130kb/s or so, I should at least be getting 150kb/s. I'm supprised i'm even getting that high since pages are displaying so slowly. I used to get 310kb/s with @home. Also pages usually don't even display when my crappy upload is maxed out. :| What is up with that??? With @home my download was barely affected even when my upload was maxed out. I'm getting to really hate comcast now. I'm about to give Sprint DSL a try............

Hmm.... my packet loss isn't that bad anymore for some reason. I guess it cleared up?

Ping statistics for 216.115.109.6:
Packets: Sent = 349, Received = 346, Lost = 3 (1% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 116ms, Maximum = 450ms, Average = 119ms

Anyway my pings still suck!

How's it going BINGBONG. I thought the tone of your post was sort of condescending, so I have to reply. If you would read what NIK said in his original post it is this: When that's up, we assign you a new IP. Hmmmm.... You do the math.

<< If you're talking about hooking two cable modems up to one computer to get twice the speed, you're smoking crack. >>

Nonsense. You can set up a server to load balance the connections or use a load balancing router such as the Nexland Pro800 Turbo. This will not give you 3000/256 (because you'll have two IP's) but what it will do is allow you to download and upload simultaneously without a speed hit. Also, if you're sharing the connection and someone is uploading, the other people won't feel the impact nearly as bad.

Cheers!

T1s are over $500 generally, and its 1.5 both ways. If a t3 actually cost $700 a month I'd run an isp out of my basement, but multiply that number by about 20+x and you are closer to what it really costs.

General question here...

I used to be on @Home, but am apparently now on ATTBroadband and NOT Comcrap since my IP does not start with 68. So will I eventually be switched over, or am I with ATTBI for good?

Thanks.

datafly @home \= comcast.

comcast used @home's internet services in some areas. @home no longer exists and all of the former @home areas are being serviced by other companies apparently in ur area it's att broadband. what makes it more confusing is comcast bought out att broadband, but they are going to continue to use the att name. so, yes and no, you are now comcast but it's called att broadband.

The new company isn't going to be att broadband. It's going to be called ATT Comcast and is going to be an operating unit of ATT going forward. So ask yourself, who bought who?

I don't do Newcomm, no. And about Nucomm being the only real support behind Comcast... you obviously haven't talked to me yet.

So, if I'm getting constant problems viewing webpages, I'm having severe packet loss problems?

When I load up most pages, either graphics or anything coming from an outside source comes up as not found. So, if I visit ESPN.com, I get all the info, but most pictures are missing and the right hand side ads are missing. I thought I might have some anti-ad software causing this (stopping external sources from loading and so on) but using CNTRL-ALT-DEL and all that is running is Explorer (using 98SE).

I'm going to try turn off the modem and reset it. All I need to do is power it off for a minute? No sequence of button presses or anything?

I'm also going to try that ping command listed above. If it's averaging over 200, I guess I need to call and get it fixed.
