Comcast to roll out faster Internet speeds

PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Comcast Corp. on Wednesday said it will begin rolling out faster Internet speeds over the next few weeks in selected markets to homes and businesses.

The nation's largest cable operator and residential Internet service provider will offer speeds up to 50 megabits per second, which enables users to download a high-definition movie in 16 minutes and a standard definition movie in 5 minutes.

Most Comcast customers will double their speeds for free.

The service will be available in parts of New England, including the Boston area and southern New Hampshire, as well as in portions of Philadelphia, New Jersey and the Twin Cities in Minnesota. Over the next few months, Comcast expects to roll it out to over 10 major markets.

For residential users, Comcast's new 'Extreme 50' tier, including up to 10 Mbps upstream service, will cost $139.95 a month. For businesses, it will cost $189.95 monthly, including extra features and support.

The 'Ultra' plan for individuals will offer speeds up to 22 Mbps for downloading and up to 5 upstream for $62.95 a month. The business "premium" tier will offer the same speeds for $99.95 a month.

To get the new Internet plans, individuals must also subscribe to Comcast's cable TV service.

So, assuming that you can get sustained download speeds of 5MB/s (the 50Mbit line should net 6MB/s, but I'll drop it to 5 for simplicity), you'd hit the 250GB cap in less than 14 hours.

I can only assume that means that if you are the standard 8MB, you get bumped to 16Mb for free. I personally dont care about down, i want to know how that affects up. It takes FOREVER to upload pics to smugmug.

Increasing the speed isn't going to suddenly make you use more bandwidth. If you don't change your habits, you don't need to worry about the cap. The faster speed will just mean that things happen faster. If you're saturating that connection for long periods of time, they don't want you as a customer.

Ha! I found the bandwidth log on my router.

October 2008 (Incoming: 23752 MB / Outgoing: 13730 MB)

It's only 1 week though. Updated my router firmware recently. So that's 100GB a month. I have the AT&T DSL 6MB plan. Have never received a bandwidth warning letter.

Right now, yes, but with sites like hulu beginning to offer streaming HD-ish content, that's going to change quickly.

My main point is the people who have previously defended the 250Gb cap seemed to stick to the 'you'd never use that much in a month' argument, but now with Comcast's fastest speed it'd take less than a day.

A 250GB cap could still be manageable even with 1,000,000Mbps downstream capacity. Just because you CAN dl the entire internet at once doesn't mean you HAVE to.

Yeah but I doubt that the max rate will be what sustained transfers actually run at. Like I said, I lowered it for simplicity and to better reflect real-world performance.

So you can download almost 18 GB in an hour. There is an easy solution, but you have to plan ahead since Comcast computes usage at EOM.

Queue up everything you want to download at the beginning of the month then start downloading. By end of month 30 days later, you will have 12,857GB of data downloaded. That's 51 months worth of data transfer in 30 days. Comcast cancels your account, you wait 6 months and sign up again, then pull some more data. Heck, Comcast may not even charge you for the month since they canceled the account.
