I have not doubt that they're aware of it and it's planned. As already stated the 250 GB folks are the obscene abusers and represent fractions of a percent of customer base. They don't want those (no provider does) and are more than happy for them to switch. Or force them to.

I'm not saying they're trying to force them to switch, just get more revenue out of them. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Comcast charge more when a user exceeds their 250GB limit?

No kidding. I use probably 20-30GB/mo, but I watch and listen to everything I download. There's just not enough time in a month to consume hundreds of GB of media.

Also, I'm not claiming that people will never need more than 250GB/mo, that's just retarded. But currently, 250GB is enough for 99.9% of their customers. If you're one of the outliers I don't know what to say other than stop bitching. It makes no sense for Comcast to cater to that 0.1% on the far right end of the bell curve.

In the future, the cap will go up. Just look at how much flak Comcast received for BT throttling; you think the FCC will let them get away with something if customers have a legitimate complaint? But for the next few years at least, it should not be an issue for most users.

What I'm wondering is if and when they're going to start selling DOCSIS 3.0 modems? Right now you can only rent them through Comcast, which means you're stuck paying rental fees and get whatever the cheapest modem of the month is. I've had a DOCSIS 1.1 Surfboard for 6 years now, and I'd like to move to a 3.0 Surfboard that I can own, once the 3.0 rollout hits out here.

Yeah, but like I said, their modems tend to suck and I want a good modem. Plus if a D3 modem lasts as long as my D1.1 has, I'm going to save $100+ in the long-run.

the typical user doesn't use much bandwidth, the .01% that abuses it (according to Comcast) shouldn't be a problem. Because most of the other 99.9% use probably a few gigs tops. Comcast could easily allow the .1% to use however much bandwidth they wanted to. It would work out to be far less than if the other 99.9% used even 25 gigs each. My mom uses next to no bandwidth and she would be much closer to the norm than the person on torrents 24/7. .1% isn't going to hurt them, they're just being penises about it.

And with 50Mb service, it would be streamable or downloadable in greater than real time. So it's a perfectly reasonable thing to do from a technology perspective.

The speed is fine. That is not the issue here. The issue is the 250GB cap. The speed doesn't do me any good considering those caps. I would go over my limit in a week and only because I want to use 1 service to watch movies? Give me a break. It is bullshit.

Not new movies all of the time. I have kids and a wife that will watch movies more than once. They love having movies on the TV especially during weekends even just to have them on as background entertainment.

Looking at the compressed formats which I was unable to find the size for when it comes to Netflix and XBL specifically we can estimate 40 movies per month if the size turns out to be similar to Vuze. I would still go over every month most likely. Movies are not the only thing I use my internet for yet that alone will either cause me to go over or at least come close. It is just 1 service!

So you're paying for each streaming rewatch from NetFlix/XBL? Doesn't seem very efficient. Trust me I know how kids like to rewatch the same movie a billion times. Thats why we buy those movies and have the disk. I then rip those disks to HDD and they can watch on whatever TV they want via LAN streaming. To stream "Little Mermaid" 10 times a month from NetFlix or XBL simply doesn't make sense.

I called Comcast yesterday to try to negotiate a lower rate by threatening to disconnect. They eventually agreed to lower my rate by $40/mo. and upgrade me to all the premium channels on TV and as an added bonus this package comes with a higher download rate. I'm surprised they even offered me this because as of now my only threat is to go to DSL+DirectTV. The real negotiating will happen when ATT Uverse or FIOS comes to town.

Streaming Little Mermaid 10 times a month doesn't make sense and if that is what they wanted then I would buy it and do something similar. They have interest in tons of movies and so does the wife and I.

Also, the service is not yet available. I am planning on buying it though. I don't have to pay per video download. It is a flat fee per month with unlimited downloads as long as I only have a few a one time. It is basically the original Netflix without the mail system. It makes so much more sense financially than it does to buy movies that are watched once or twice every 2 months in addition to new movies. It is also really nice because I don't have to stock up on tons of hard drives.

Is there also no cap for the ultra plan? If so then I would consider it reasonable.

The 'Ultra' plan for individuals will offer speeds up to 22 Mbps for downloading and up to 5 upstream for $62.95 a month.
