Got off the phone with my local Comcast folks and they said my Motorola SB5101 is not capable of being configured to run a static IP. So the lil old lady (who's a AARP member) said I need a "SMC Business IP Gateway" and also said I needed "DOC3" (I imagine she means DOCSIS 3.0).

Can anyone let me know wth is a SMC Business IP Gateway?

I want to make sure that when I call them back (God for bid they have a crew of lil old ladies manning the phones) I have everything I need to make this go smoothly.

Do I just need to buy a Motorola SB6120 (or equiv)? Any preferences/recommendations by folks? I'm using a D-LINK DGL-4500.

You need Comcast Business to get a static IP. When you get business service, they give you the right modem. Business class usually requires a 1 year contract and install fee of something like $300.

if you skip the static ip you can use any modem with comcast business, may take a couple calls or posting on their comcast forum

if you use static ip you have to have the SMC gateway they provide

Have you looked into DynDNS?
http://dyn.com/dns/dyndns-free/

It's not a static IP - but it does give you a permanent hostname
that will point to whatever IP Comcast gives you on the cheaper residential plan ..and it's free

You definitely need the SMC Cable modem/gateway that they provide with Business Class service. Comcast configures the route for your subnet using RIPv2, IIRC, and they don't share the authentication details.

The lil old lady said I needed DOC3 (I imagine DOCSIS 3.0) because my current modem wasn't fast enough for a static IP.

I told her I'd get a new modem and call back.

She said she could setup a static IP for me @ $4.99/mo for 1 IP, $9.99/mo for 5 IP's.

So I'm going to try and get a new modem over the weekend and see what happens.

If you want static IP you have to use their bridge. They won't give you the passwords required to put your IP in to their router table. You can use other modems on business service if you don't have static IPs. If you need a static IP then don't waste your time buying one and calling them. It has nothing to do with speed, just that they require their own team to manage all the static ip devices.

This. If you buy your own modem, your static IPs will not work.
