Even when you're not seeding, you're still uploading with BT as long as the torrent is running.

I did download that from a public tracker. Because i didnt want to kill my ratio worse if i used a private one.

Which one, specifically? And what trackers was that .torrent using?

I'm asking only out of curiousity/educational purposes, and to help you out.

Like if you got it from IsoHunt or TorrentSpy, then they usually use more then one tracker. And they also have DHT enabled by default. Pay attention to which trackers are used and google for which ones are known to be monitored more then others. Also turn DHT off for good through whatever client you use. If your using anything other then uTorrent or Azureus, switch.

And yes, you should use the torrent equivelant of PeerGuardian. Its called SafePeer in Azureus and comes preloaded now instead of as an external plugin. For uTorrent, all you need to do is download the latest IP ranges from in a flat file.

More info on everything I've said here and get the blocklists Here and here and lastly, here

Was this an email or letter you received via snail mail? Either way the date is 12/17/06 which is one helluva turnaround time. They don't respond that fast when you have a friggin problem.

Lesson learned

But seriously, switch to Azureus and make sure SafePeer stays up to date. Or just use uTorrent and download that latest flat file from bluetrack, save it as a txt file and put it in your \Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\uTorrent and then check the log tab when uTorrent loads and make sure it has a line that says something like "128946123492364 IP filters loaded"

Well, a media company is a lot more likely to actually take 'em to court over a DMCA letter. A customer doesn't really represent that sort of financial risk -- unless they're inviting the ire of the MPAA or some other media conglomerate.

At any rate, though, OP is aware that the game can be purchased for US dollars in any number of physical or online stores. If you decide to get on the p2p nets then you must expect content owners to be watching -- there's a risk you'll get tagged with one of these. So, yeah. They'd like you to kindly stop giving away the product they're trying to sell. To avoid other letters like this, stop redistributing software that you aren't licensed to give away. Or try to improve your odds with the other strategies here.

Take a couple of weeks to look harder.

You committed piracy by downloading S/W that was known to be illegal.

packeteer?

It's a way to limit traffic based on actual content and not just ports. If they turned this on things like bit torrent would work but at speeds like 1bps - so slow that folks would not bother.

The harcore would find another way such as a neighbor's open wifi sharing dsl or another type of connection without limits - but the burden would be off (Comcast's) back.

Even if he uses NAT, its easy to figure out that it's pointing to his IP/MAC.

More commonly known as traffic shaping. Packeteer is the creator and Packet Shaper is one of the popular products that accomplishes network traffic control.
