My understanding is that they have to trench through your property up to your house to get the fiber there -- think I'll pass on that

I have fios now. Nothing like it.

I am at 30down/5up and it is VERY consistant for only about $50. Only problem is that they seem to have issues with outlook (very strange).

The only people who actually need the super fast downsteam of fios is people who download like huge files from the fastest pipes out there on a regular basis. Heck, often when I'm downloading a file from somewhere on the net it doesn't even max out my current connection, so having fios wouldn't help people like me much at all. Now the 5 MB upload would be awesome though.

I complained for the same reason - they sent out a tech with a new modem and Viola! 8mbs/700k steady...

What modem or what are the modem requirements to reach 8mbs/700k ?

comcast CSSR will say anything to get you hooked up. but when a tech gets there to do the work and then the customer says that whats on the w/o is not what they were told over the phone... I also think comcast is not the best at valueing their customers except for dish winback situations. $29.95 for 2 months? for f'in stnd cable? c'mon, thats an insult. their retention department is lazy because the call reps get paid about min wage (but people who work for comcast get all their stuff for free, DVRs, HD, you name it, all those $20 specialty channels..FREE....us 'contractors' [we do the majority of their work anyway] get squat). i'd hardly feel motivated to provide any type of deal let alone 'customer service' on the phone if i were getting paid near min wage.

but that aside, this does sound like a rather good deal, if you can get it to work and have a competant cssr.

I tried this "upgrade" for a few months, but I didn't see any speed increase! I called several times but Comcast reps could never make my connection any faster than my normal service (they don't seem to know or care if I can get the increase in speed). I am lucky to get 3Mbps DL. It may increase your upload to 368K, but unless you get 7-8 Mbps speeds, it's not worth it. It doesn't make sense if they can't either 1) get you the speed as advertised or 2) provide you with the modem that's capable. I've tried several modems, and nothing got me the 8 Mbps speeds. Sometimes, I get very slow speeds which doesn't really make sense. All I can say is, go for it, but check your speeds! If you don't get it, don't pay...

Who? SBC? They have sales right now you know, I think it was down to like $27 for the 3mbit package. You can ask them to reduce the price.

It's $17.99/month for the pro package (3Mbps) for new subscibers. I just renewed for $24.99/month.

My speeds with Comcast are always between 750 and 810 Kb/s (= 6 to 6.5 MB/s).

tigerbalm - There is a reasonable chance that you are limited by your router or PC setup. When I upgraded to 8MB package, I was only getting 3MB or so. I checked my speed with

http://ciseweb100.cise-nsf.gov:7123/

and then did "more details" finding that my buffers were set too small. I used TCPOptimizier to reset my buffers and my speed increased some but not beyond 5mb. I then replaced my ancient sonicwall firewall/router with a slightly newer model & Voila - 8.4MB Download was achieved.

You might want to try changing your usenet port if your news provider allowss. I know giganews will also allow port 23 and 80 in addition to 119. I noticed a slow down in speed with the standard port then changed to one of the others, and the speed went back up. I think Comcast was throttling newsgroup access.

Last year I was totally out of control with the newsgroups.I was downloading everything. Then I got a phone call from comcast asking what the heck I was doing. They said average monthly usage was about 20gig.Mine was 230 gig. They threatened to charge me as a business and stuff so I cancelled my newsgroup subscription and took a year off.I'm back on them now but try to take it easy on how much I download. My speed is decent but it did go down a little. With my opteron 165 it doesnt matter because I can still use computer while downloading.
