anyone want to explain to me how any more than 3 people "voice chatting" on this Ventrilo thingy sounds like anything other than gibberish?

forgive my n00bness on this one, but i've always wondered how it worked. seems to me like it would be tough to discern one voice from another if everyone was chatting simultaneously.

unless... there's a virtual "conch"... which is even geekier :Q

it basically sounds like a normal conversation with a bunch of people. Not everyone is talking at once.
but everyone *could* talk at once?

yes, and then it gets a little bit confusing, but thats just like IRL.

the difference being IRL you can focus your attention on one person or even a few and have a chat with them, sort of like a group within a group.

well, there are channels, so if its imperative that you hear the other person, you kinda just move into another channel.

That's when the different channels come in handy. They let you do just that.

Michael you should come back tonight, you had already gone idle by the time I drunkenly found my way into the channel.
My apologies. Trying to plan on being there again tonight (Saturday).

Perhaps Ross has fixed poor Susan's problematic internet connection by now, as she was in and out last weekend.

Susan's internet woes have been FIXED. My beloved Microsoft 802.11b wireless router finally kicked the bucket. So I replaced it with a Linksys WRTG54 and ever since then the connection hasn't been dropped once.

Excellent! You had the wrong key, didn't you?

(dodges, ducks, dips, dives, and dodges)

My headset issues have now been resolved, and thus I think I should swing by the channel sometime this weekend. Saturdaynightesque, perhaps.

ROTFLMAO

Uh no, I didn't have the wrong key

A co-worker was telling me he was able to crack his and his neighbors WEP in 5 minutes, so now I'm paranoid. I might just hookup our desktops, laptop and TiVo wired and turn off the wireless part of the router.

It can happen. It depends on the wireless traffic generated at the router/access point level, but it can be accomplished with approximately 50,000 packets/200,000 IVs for 64-bit WEP (4x or so times for 128-bit).

Part III of this article might get you started in the right direction of locking down your WLAN (and your LAN, for that matter).

Sadly, there are roughly 11 totally unsecured access points within range of my apartment. 7 of the above have the default SSID, and the default password (have tried to find these people to inform them they have security risks, but most are outside my building).
