Sheer speculation on my part follows.

Trump was petulant even by the low standard he's set with Merkel. Remember where he wouldn't shake her hand? He was pissed about something and that happens when he doesn't get whatever he wants. Whatever was discussed likely included NATO and how they were ripping us off (in his mind) and I should not be surprised if Trump giving NATO the finger is at least in part because of his interaction with Merkel.

The speed with which the administration and Trump's surrogates are trying to sprint away from Paul Manafort after Comey's testimony is interesting. They're borderline trying to create an alt-universe where he doesn't exist. CNN was straight up playing a clip montage of Trump and his campaign people singing Manafort's praises when surrogates tried to back up Spicer's assertion that his role was small and limited.

I can only presume there is something bad for Trump buried in that relationship and/or Manafort's contacts.

Possibly, but don't you think the optics of this are terrible given recent events? Even if there really is no collusion, how incompetent can this administration be? This decision doesn't exactly inspire trust in wake of Monday's hearing.

Nunes said on camera that he briefed Trump on the investigation into russia and link to his campaign. He has apologised for his lapse of judgement. Heard it on radio, I'll try to find a news article later.


Edit, not russia link, it was that Trump was being monitored. He told Trump before telling the whole committee. He apparently met with republican members of the intel committee and they advised him to not talk to Trump. He did anyway.
