In summary,
Cherokee Nation did not bring up the usage of Cherokee on Jeep products.
Car and Driver asked them a question. An individual responded with his opinion
He responded with a pre-canned response that covers all usage of Cherokee names on mascots and products.

When you are a mature adult who actually puts thought into why Cherokee nation would want corporations to stop usage of the term Cherokee, the first thing that should have popped into your head was Intellectual property rights and $$$$$$$.

Their model line-up generally appeals only to existing customers, and they don't have an entry-level model.
They used to have a couple based on the Revolution X engine, when did those go away?

If it was a diesel, Jeep seems to have habit of adopting one, then turns around and abandons them, cause they apparently just don't get them.

Be that as it may, I still like the car and if you can ignore some quality quirks, and idiot lights telling me something is wrong that I can't fix until FCA figures out how to fix it. The car always worked fine even when the engine light was on, it was just not doing it's pollution cleaning job right. The lawsuit settlement was quite equitable in my opinion, and I'm going to keep it as long as the warranty extension lasts (now 120000 miles) which has already paid off in replacement of the DEF pump, which out of pocket at the Shsyler dealer is approximately $800.
I got a "you must go to the dealer" message when the DEF pump went out, but the car ran fine still even then.

My Father used to sell Piper planes until the early '80s, before retiring. Before that sold Beechcraft planes (mid '60s-late '70s).
I wonder if they (Cherokee nation) had a problem of it being used.

Is this the sort of headline that gets "those people" panties up in a bunch?
How many of you had a first reaction of "That political correctness is out of control!!" without even reading the story?
I do appreciate how this is now turning into a Jeep Diesel complaint thread and "Memories of my dad". So maybe some good can come out of this thread.
Friend is also having problems with his diesel jeep. Everything from the piss tank fluid sensors to CEL's

The real epidemic in this country is not reading the fucking article.

I admit to not reading the story and reacted to the headline. That's what they want you to do. As long as you click the link, load their advertising, etc., they could care less if you read the article or not. Now, if someone on here, a usual member, brought it up it would have taken on a completely different coloration of the matter. Let's not play the fool, here, C&D was just as much in it for the ad revenue as anyone else. I chose to reply on the idea being put forward. AND most importantly, trying to funny while being sarcastic. But I got some really interesting responses, now didn't I? Shoot, I may be working for Anandtech and pushing their ad revenue, now.

The Jeep Cherokee name "does not honor us," says Cherokee Nation Chief Hoskin...

I dont blame him. Chrysler/Fiat have been making junk cars for a long time.

They know it's easy click bait.
Arstechnica even went the extra mile to include links back to other Arstechnica articles to generate even more clicks. The old "As we previously covered " bullshit where the references to the article is simply more content from your own site.

Car and Driver, whatever their original intent was appears to have made editorial decisions to shape a narrative without actually providing the something that backs up the narrative.
"For the first time, the Cherokee Nation is asking Jeep to change the name of its Cherokee and Grand Cherokee vehicles. "
- No evidence that the Cherokee Nation directly asked Jeep anything.
- Quotes allude to broad usage of Indian names and nothing specific to Jeep.

I would expect one of the first questions that should have been asked is "Where is the text of the Husky's response?"
Car and driver starts off with -" Chuck Hoskin, Jr., principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, told Car and Driver in a written statement responding to our request for comment on the issue " yet does not link to the statement which they themselves have ownership of.
They fill the article will fluff, a couple of links to various articles and C&D to give the air of legitimacy.

It's Arstechnica and C&D so the journalistic standards aren't exactly at the level of real publications (which is fine).

So Jeep likes native American tribe names, Chevy likes french, and mexican/western names, and Ford likes the horses and very a sacred native American deity, the Thunderbird. Just saying.

Jeep throws a check engine light when the driver tries to leave the Casino on the indian reservation
Chevy, built in Mexico, filled with French fries and some idiot blasting county western music top cover the sound of rod knock.
Ford, smells like rotten thunderbird eggs and the dealer is trying to screw you with horse cock when the turbo fails..

I do believe you've quoted the wrong fellow. I was asking about Harley.

Aren't Harleys just overpriced shit bikes for fat old dudes at this point?

Rider here.
Sport bikes and Standards are my game.
As much as I can't stand the rider community,
150HP...no fiddling with valve adjustments

Also their basic bikes are pretty decent as hassle free commuter\errand bikes. If I recall correctly an Iron 1200 is an excellent point and squirt bike in traffic. While not something I would buy, they're fine as long as you keep old fat dudes from turning them into obnoxious trash heaps for bar hopping post divorce.

They actually have some pretty attractive models (I think the nightrod is pretty cool). But outside of that I find their styling pretty meh.
I'd get a standard or adventure bike if I rode the street again.
Sports bikes really are meant for the track

I was poking fun at Harley killing off their lower priced models and adopting a strategy of building fewer more expensive bikes that focus on their traditional rider base which is aging. Its a strategy designed to put the company in a death spiral.

OH NO! Whatever will we do?! Feelings are getting hurt!

I guess we will have to rename an epic fuckton of planes, helicopters, previous military missions, etc... That will fix things, good as new!

Suppose I feel a bit numb on the issue and am just bothered by the change. I do appreciate that refusing change "just because it has always been that way" is not a good argument. Especially if the change is to prevent harm. Though I remain lost as to how this harmed anyone. Though I do not belong to any group that has any name to protect. I am an American. Full stop. That's it.

Trying to copyright all the names in existence and say we cannot use them seems a bit daft. Though we are Americans and we did Genocide these poor people. So this would be a special consideration perhaps, out of recognition and in respect of our shared history?

If they do change it, seems needless but oh well. No sweat off my back if they do.
