That's what happened to me. Actually, I think it was when I turned to the third page, then scrolled down and saw there was going to be a fourth page!

I also don't remember any "Beginner" section heading, so I thought the questions would remain as lame.

Hmmmm, I'm guessing from the listed scoring percentages that there are 30 questions in each section (each wrong answer would deduct 3.33% from your section score, then).

That would mean I'd never made it out of "Beginner", which seems about right.

At least one person scored perfect 100's, and they hang around OT . . . how hard can it be?

Welcome to the internet.

If I was writing a thesis, I would pay a bit closer attention. Regardless, I bet my posts are written much better than most average posts. I would venture to guess that my posts are written better than the papers written by many children in school these days. That's the sad thing.

You scored 100% Beginner, 100% Intermediate, 100% Advanced, and 93% Expert!

I checked their answers, and the question I supposedly answered incorrectly was a gaffe on their part. "Whoever" is an acceptable use in their example, even though "whomever" is preferred. If you're going to make a test, at least make sure it's correct.

I haven't gotten that far yet (see several posts above), but the rules on "whoever" and "whomever" are quite clear. "Whomever" is always the object in a sentence, "whoever" always the subject.

I don't mean to insult you. I'm SURE you know and employ this rule. Your wording makes your point amibiguous to me, though.

There is no case (that I know of), where "whoever" would merely be an acceptable use, only cases in which it would be the (only) acceptable use.

Concommittantly, there is no case in which "whomever" would be "preferred", only instances in which it would be the only acceptable usage.

Are you saying the answer they considered correct was something like, "either (a) or (b)?"

Sorry for being so anal. English is serious business!

Edit: N/M. Took the test.

You said, "'Whoever' is an acceptable use in their example, even though 'whomever' is preferred."

I think you just got confused. "Whoever" was NOT an acceptable use in their example. "Whomever" was the unambiguously correct answer.

I'm guessing you got another question wrong instead. Perhaps it was #33, where I simply couldn't see how any of the possible answers weren't acceptable. Turns out, I was right, they were. The correct answer was "all of the above".

Edit: N/M. The test was much shorter and lamer than I thought.

You scored 100% Beginner, 100% Intermediate, 100% Advanced, and 100% Expert!

You did so extremely well, even I can't find a word to describe your excellence! You have the uncommon intelligence necessary to understand things that most people don't. You have an extensive vocabulary, and you're not afraid to use it properly! Way to go!
Thank you so much for taking my test. I hope you enjoyed it!

Advanced

You scored 93% Beginner, 100% Intermediate, 93% Advanced, and 73% Expert!
You have an extremely good understanding of beginner, intermediate, and advanced level commonly confused English words, getting at least 75% of each of these three levels' questions correct. This is an exceptional score. Remember, these are commonly confused English words, which means most people don't use them properly. You got an extremely respectable score.

Yeah, it is pretty sad that you compare your writing to papers written by children. There aren't very many posters here who make so many stupid posts that I take notice. pcslookout is one. ICRS is one. You are one.

I'm disappointed in myself. I should have gotten better than 80% but oh well, I know there are a couple words that tend to trip me up here and there.

Not bad for a non-native speaker if I say so myself.

I'm not comparing my writing to that of children. I'm comparing posts on an internet forum. I don't care to take the time to bother with making everything proper here.

Perhaps if you had any basic comprehension skills you would have grasped that.

And if my posts are stupid, yours must be drivel spat out of an incoherent drunkard.

That quiz was way too fricking long. Did the quiz remind anyone else of kindergarten?

Ha, ha, yeah, man. I agree. The collective state of our English usage blows.

Your answer was so funny simply because of all the bragging you did immediately before committing six sharp errors in one short paragraph:

I could have majored in English easily.

I constantly find errors in newspapers and magazines, etc. I could have easily been an editor.

I may not be able to diagram complex sentences any longer, but common spelling and word usage is trivial.

And then, without segue, BOOM! It kind of defined irony!

But, yeah, I hear you, "Welcome to the internet." Lord knows my personal usage standards have gone down the tubes here as well. For some reason, it's affected my spelling most of all.

At least you're highly skilled in Photoshop, Odin, and generously share your expertise with others. There, I'm the equivalent of a drooling functional illiterate.
