Comp. Engineering or Comp. Science

What should i take? I like doing webdesign and web programming, but i also would like to learn a lob about building computer chips and stuff. Any advice

There are some CS programs where you'll learn about CPUs. In fact, it's pretty much required if you want to do any substantial programming to understand the inner workings of a computer system. In my program we'll eventually have to design our own CPU I believe. I'm in software engineering btw. I'm sure comp eng is a hell of a lot more hardware intensive though. CS is a lot more math I think...it's really a subset of mathematics. CE will be a lot of math as well but CS is a lot more theoretical stuff.

With either program, picking up new languages will be easy. Once you learn C, C++, Java, Perl...they all start to look the same! And you'll probably learn of have to know C/C++ for CE. Java is a lot like C++ only easier. Perl is just a great language that you'll pick up but never fully understand. I say don't base your choice of program based on this web programming aspect.

unless you want to design hardware in the future, don't major in EE. seems like you should major in CS and take some EE courses. as opposed to majoring in EE and taking some CS courses.

Good descriptions. I'm personally going CE because I want to learn about computer hardware, although now I'm almost thinking about EE.

I'm faced with the same dilemma. I'm going with Comp. Eng just because all the Comp. Sci jobs are being taken!

I would check at your school's website or something for the prereq and required classes for graduation. Generally Comp Sci requires lots of math, while Comp Eng requires the same amount + lots of PHYSICS. I for one HATE physics with a vengeance, so I'm going the Comp Sci route

aww, crap i'm more confused than ever. Ok, for the job outlook in the next 30-40 years what should i go for. i think in the end i just want to own my biz. But stuff to do with computers. like advance hardware fixing. making programs, and websites. hmm, i don't think i really know what i want to do. crap!

If you love math like, math above calc3 then do computer engineering. If you like math up to calc2 and below and loath calc3 do computer science.
