Hey all,

Working on an old comp here, doing a reformat. Replaced the heatsink with a quieter one, added 128MB PC133 memory, replaced HD with a better one, and replaced the DVD and CDRW drives with upgraded models. Now, the machine powers up, but I am getting nothing on screen. The monitor's blinking yellow light is beginning to get to me... :frown:

CMOS was cleared, put on another CPU heatsink, removed new memory, checked data and power connectors, disconnected HD, sound card, etc, to no avail.

Machine specs:

AMD 1Ghz Tbird, Taisol Standard HS
MSI K7T Turbo2
256MB PC133 - Crucial CAS2 (sought to add another Crucial CAS2 128MB module)
IBM Deskstar 20GB replaced by --> Western Digital 80GB JB
Gainward Geforce 2 Ti 64MB
Plextor 40/12/40 (new)
Toshiba 12X DVD (new)
SB Live!
PC Power Cooling Turbo-Cool 300
Fong Kai 603 case

Unless I'm forgetting to check something, I get the feeling some on the board stopped working. Any ideas as to what might be the problem?

NTLDR error usually means the HD isn't bootable.
your boot sector is screwed up.
This is usually a Win2k/XP error.

But your system isn't firing up,so thats not the problem. (Yet)

Have you checked your PSU?
tried unhooking all Drives except HD?

Also may want to pull board outside of the case, lay it on some antistatic bag and try to fire it up that way.
maybe with changing the CPU's,Ram etc,it may be some how shorting the board out.
pulling it out of the case may let it boot up.

A couple things:

1) check the third and fourth photos here

2) be aware that the WD hard drive will need to be jumpered for Single Drive, not Master or Slave or Cable Select, if it has its own data cable.

3) take out the SB Live, they clash with certain VIA southbridges

4) make sure the keyboard's plugged into the proper port, since the two PS/2 ports have dedicated mouse or keyboard functionality

5) try to validate as many parts as you can in a known-working system, to help narrow stuff down

6) that out-of-the-case benchtest is a good suggestion, use only the items that are essential for a POST.

Well, I'm sure that the heatsink is properly on. The SB Live was removed to no effect. The WD drive was jumpered to Master, not Single Drive, so I can change that. Though, the HD was disconnected earlier, with no positive result. I'll see what I can do for the last two steps. Thanks for the help.

Any other suggestions before I start shopping for a new mobo/cpu combo?

Not yet. I have a feeling that the mobo is shorting out. There might be some random piece of plastic or metal floating around in the case. But, maybe it's the battery.

That MSI board is one of the boards that is known to
have been built with detective capacitors.

You may want to check the board throughly for any
tell-tale signs (brownish fluid oozing out of caps, puffy caps, etc..)

Oh joy. Well, I'll check that out. Thanks for the info. If I have to replace the mobo/cpu, any recommendations. for an ultra-stable Nforce2 board? I was looking at the MSI Delta2.

Soogiebro, I'll let you know if that works.
