I hate to see B&M technology stores go out of business because it narrows down the places you can actually go to to get hands on purchases. But CompUSA simply did NOT want to compete. They were a non-survivor in the Darwinian world of economic competition and they killed themselves by flatly refusing to treat the customer as an important person in their store.

LMAO at all the fools who go there and buy stuff during their higher-than-retail "going out of business" sale.

Just came back from the NYC store at Broadway/59th. Can report that there was still a lot of stock of everything. I spent some time looking, and unfortunately, deals aren't that good. Everything is 10-20% off their already inflated prices. Another drawback is ALL SALES ARE FINAL.

Best deal I found was 20% off PSU's which is actually still pretty bad considering prices were inflated to begin with. I had a 1000W Antec Truepower in-hand, ready to buy for $225, but realized you can get this online for under $200 now.

I'm not worried about it since I live in a very dense metropolitan area. Just saying the people in those big rectangle states who might only have Best Buy as a local option would be better served with more competition. Sometimes you can't sit around and wait for something to come in the mail.

was there a hour ago, all the prices are still too high.

the only things that were a decent deal were Console games and acessories, they were like 5 or 10 dollar cheaper then normal prices.

ink is 15% off, which good if you buy that stuff.

hard drives are like double the newegg price - 15%

store is still mostly stocked as the deals suck, not many are falling for the pretend discounts.

lol. I was gonna head there in ~1 hour. I guess I'll stay home.

I am looking for a decent set of speakers. Did they give any indication on when it would be their last day?

Went to check out the Tallahassee store- the parking lot was filled. As above, 99% no bargains compared to past or online. My wife, however, did find the Bose IPOD dock for $239- regularly $299. Haven't seen it discounted elsewhere.

Yesterday (Jan 04) a kid was standing at an intersection holding a sign up that read "33% off." I went to check it out (I need to get a wireless keyboard my cat can't chew through) and at the door found a sign saying "10-30% off." No biggie, though, right? 33% vs. 30%? It's a little deceptive, but I can forgive them the 3%. Well, the keyboards were only 15% off, and that didn't even come close to covering the price disparity between themselves and NewEgg.

Rockford, IL location.

Two items of interest:

1. CompUSA To Offer Post-Liquidation Support

"CompUSA was expected to create a special-purpose Web site to provide customers with information on its post-liquidation policies covering such customer service programs as gift cards, rain checks, rebates and extended-service contracts."

2. up to 16 stores bought by Tiger Direct

"Systemax, a Port Washington-based consumer electronics company, said yesterday it is buying the CompUSA brand, Web site and up to 16 of its retail stores. The stores and Web site will continue operating under the CompUSA brand but will be run by Systemax subsidiary TigerDirect."

Wow! Thanks 'allisolm'!! I needed a good laugh.

My least favorite retailer is going to survive (partially) by being run by my least favorite etailer. Now thats funny!
Its a consumer matchmaking by Hades. I hope one catches fire and the other one burns.

Um, yea stopped in to my local store to see if they had any deals. The sad thing is that after their 15%-30% markdown, they are still overpriced by about 15-30%. And that's just to get the price down to normal prices you could get from nearly anywhere else. Their prices on memory were just stupid, still overpriced by about 200% on some stuff. Wonder why they went out of business.

Oh yea, I looked at buying some of their "store" too. (like desks and shelves and things. They are selling everything in Des Moines, IA) But they have these stupid signs up everywhere that tell you that you also pay a "10% buyer's premium" on that stuff. Huh? You're going to charge me an additional 10%? No thank you. Why didn't they just factor that into the price then and label it with your cost? Yea. Good riddance. And that says a lot because all we have in Des Moines is Best Buy.

I did find some Antec tricool LED fans that were about a wash vs newegg once you factored in shipping, but that was about it. And I wandered around that store for about an hour trying to justify the trip out there.

A couple of pricing points in case you guys want to price match with the CompUSA in knoxville TN

Im more interested in fixture type deals so I didn't pay much attention to everything else beyond noting they were not worth my time.

Screen wipes single use 1$ each
Random CDrom drives 20$
3ft USB printer cables 10$ each
Compaq PC around 1.5gig 512mb ram used 300$
Sony PSOne from the breakroom wraped up in its own cables 50$
One walmart gas grill 75$
15inch heavily used CRT 25$
Whiteboards with line stains on them 75$+

I did note they were selling display model laptops for a whopping 5% under their price and calling it "below cost" Totally worth buying something "all sales final"

I keep going back trying to catch the last couple of days but man it seems like they are going to be going out of business for at least the rest of the month if not into the next.

bleh.

The ONLY thing that I was able to find when my local CompUSA store went out of business was a tin or two of the caffinated mints (Bawls brand).
Personaly, I am caffiene free, but since I work at a place that runs 24-7-365, I gave them to co-workers. Needless to say they wished I had bought a lot more!

BTW: When my X1900XTX went bad (bought from CompUSA with a PRP), I tried getting a replacement from a local store. This was like one week before they anounced the store closings and no local store had any good cards in stock. Well, I take a trip into Manhattan and bought my BFG 8800GTS which the Manhattan store still carried. When I am checking out (and paying the difference in price on the cards), the clerk offers me a PRP. I explain to him how the last one turned out, and that I live several counties away. He seems unfazed. I explain to him how BFG offers a lifetime warranty and I won't need a PRP, again he seems unfazed. I decline and leave and know somewhere deep in my being that there are more closings to come.

edit: i think i misread your post. I thought that you were in the manhattan store recently.

I popped into my last local store over the weekend just because I was in the area. Total garbage. 20%-30% off many items that were 50-60% too high to begin with. Even at 30% nothing even approached being a decent deal. At 50% it would be worth poking around. They're going to need to slash prices further because they had tons of stock and few customers at the current prices.

I don't understand, did you get your 8800GT?

The clerk is just a vulnerable human.

Stopped by the South Orlando store today.

Nearly everything is 20% off with a few 25 to 40 stuff.

Not really a whole lot left, about half the store was empty.

Did end up buying me an iMac 10% off. Since they are never on sale anyplace it was a decent deal.

Would love to find out when they plan to close and blow every thing left out the door. They still have a lot of large format printers, power supplies and networking stuff.

Well, went into the two in Charlotte, NC today. Fairly well cleaned out. Few video cards left. Amazingly, almost all the memory is gone....despite the prices being unrealistically high (2GB kit of Kingston HyperX DDR2-800 RAM "listing" for $199 before a whopping 20% off.)

But, the power supplies were 40% off, and the prices listed on them are exactly what Newegg lists as their retail prices. But I can only really speak about the Antec Quattros, the 850 and 1000W, and the Corsair HX620.

Bought one of each of those.....the Corsair HX620 came out to be $102, not a bad price at all. The Quattro 850 came in at $149, and the Quattro 1000 was $179...not huge savings but cheaper than Newegg's price, even after the rebates on the Quattro 1000 and the HX620 from the 'egg.

I can't say for sure, but all of them will eventually close. Like a previous post asked, I would love to know what
their markdown schedule is. Right now 20-40% seems to be the norm for most items. There a few things I will
jump on if they do a 30-50% storewide.
