I'm not going to declare a "best" just like that. Instead, it takes breaking down:
Newegg: ram, CPU, mobos, power supplies, video cards, etc.
Local stores: hard drives, optical drives, ram, video cards (when on sale). Yes, these items are a good amount cheaper when they're on sale. Say, the repackaged NEC-2500a for $50 Ar at OfficeMax. But the key is to get good sales. Of course, if you're buying CPU's or motherboards at stores like Compusa, you're getting ripped off badly, but you're also paying more by getting drives at Newegg.

Customer service varies store to store. Good thing I have two circuitcity's locally I find that the office stores tend to be good at customer service (no 15% restocking fee), while returning stuff at CC now is a pain. Newegg always comes up with something reasonable or more-than-reasonable if something goes awry.

newegg in my opinion is a great seller, awesome shipping speeds, prices are very good as well

however i think if you need something in a hurry, compusa and bestbuy are the way to go, they also pricematch as well which is useful if you find good deals in other stores and combine it with coupons or gift certificates

Actually, there are many more choices. Some have been mentioned, such as Fry's and Best Buy. OfficeMax and Staples are significant, too. And, I believe someone mentioned local stores. I've bought a few computer components from a company that has just two stores in the Columbus, OH, area. Then, there's a larger company, what I would call a regional since they a mult-state but not a national company; I'm talking about MicroCenter, which is based in Columbus.

Newegg for Internet purchases. Absolutely great customer service and man they're fast on deliveries.
Circuit City for their pricematch policy. Fond memories of snagging an ALC 251 for 10 bucks incl tax when I PM'd last year.

Service: Newegg.
Returns: Newegg, but you pay for shipping. The others you pay for gasoline.

Sam's for monitors, optical media, and cables, though. HDDs on occasion, as Sam's is the only place that carries any worth buying (if you save $15, which is normal for a sale, for 2 years less of a warranty, how much are you really saving?).

I prefer Newegg, but I will go to CompUSA or Circuit City if I need a part ASAP. Otherwise, Newegg's prices are quite a bit lower. As well, I have nothing bad to say about their customer service.

I usually go to Fry's over Newegg since it's more convenient. I mostly stay away from CompUSA and Circuit City, except during holiday sales.

I've had a bad experience with CompUSA, went with friend and bought a pci tv card there, went to his house to install it for him. Ended up the card was like too big to fit in pci slot, was realy weird! So took the card back told them what was up and had them exchange the card for another one thinking it was just like a bad card. Ended up all of the cards were like that so we took it back and the guy said he would install it for us(think he just didn't want us to return it). So next day friend takes his computer and card to CompUSA to get it installed, they ended up charging him to install the pci card like $40 because the package was opened and denting his case to get the retarded pci card in!

Have you considered the possibility, that if a "PCI card", was too big to fit into a "PCI slot", then perhaps the slot in question wasn't actually a "PCI slot" to begin with? Please don't be offended, but it was probably the right thing to do to pay them to install the card for you.

LOL I was trying to install it into the pci slot (I?m positive it was the pci slot), the freaken card was like too big! I've installed a few pci cards (2 cards on this computer, 1 card on parents, 2 cards on friends? its easy! ) And it wasn't his machine, I had already installed some 5.1 pci sound card, which fit fine. But the fact they dented his case (without consulting him) just to get their crappy little card in, and charged him just because the tv card box was ?opened? (wtf kind of excuse is that? The guy said just bring the machine to the store and they would install it? for free) that?s what bothered me.

best buy is good for the occasional big sales they have there, ie the black friday sales, etc. The one near me is two floors and they carry a ok selection but they have a generous return policy.

fry's SUCKS and outpost.com (fry's online) sucks even more. BB never gives you your rebates, CC is good but doesnt seem to have as many deals, and newegg kicks ass.

I don't know where you got that idea, but it's simply not true. I've made numerous purchases at BB that I received rebates on.

CompUSA has the worst prices, unless you're dealing with an instant or mail-in rebate. Even the stuff in the "bargain" bins are super expensive.

As for Best Buy, I don't know if it's because I live in a crappy neighborhood, but the customer service there sucks. I tried doing a pricematch there once, and the rep didn't understand so I tried explaining to her how her company promises the difference plus 10%. Here was her response:

"You just told me your whole scheme."

This wasn't the only time I had problems with Best Buy. I vowed before that I would never shop there again, but decided to give them a chance. Now though, I'm really never shopping there again.

Circuit City has decent prices once in awhile, and I especially like their in-store pickup option, although I think CompUSA has that now too (if you don't mind rebates).

Finally, I have never had any problems with NewEgg. Sometimes I don't mind paying a little higher price to shop there for the peace of mind.

Based on what everyone has said about their experiences pricematching (or attempting to) at BB, I'm starting to suspect that there is some sort of unsaid rule in their training material, that causes them to treat customers attempting to take advantage of the PM policy as quasi-criminals.

(Maybe it's a natural subconcious reaction that people have, after being "told" how much BB's cost is for items, relative to their retail price? There was one alleged BB employee that posted in a thread I started in ATHD last month, claiming that they only made negligible profit on most computer items. If the CSRs honestly believe that to be true, then I could possibly see how they would have a subconcious reaction to someone attempting to PM.)

CompUSA will match anything short of shady internet sites..

And their TAP program is better than most other retailers.
