Compact Flash Memory cards, any difference between brands?

HI all,

just looking at purchasing my first digital camera (looking at a canon A95) and want to get either a 512Mb or 1Gb CF card.

Question is are all CF cards the same or they difer model to model, seem some prices on LEmar and Kingston CF cards. Are either of these any good? ANy better brands i should look for etc etc

There are some diffirences in speed and, at the pro level, diffirences in how much they will bother to feel your pain if something happens. For the sizes you are discussing, however, probably not too much. Speed doesn't seem to correllate particularly well with brand. Odds are you would do pretty well to just buy on price. Have a look at some benchmarks http://www.dpreview.com/articles/mediacompare/ I don't know how many of these you can still buy (and they may be the same brand and size; but a diffirent process, and your camera may be faster or slower than the test system, etc.) but it might give you some idea.

CF cards differ from brand to brand, model to model, and sometimes even within the same model. They also differ to a certain degree depending on which camera you use them. If you are not trying to shoot in continuous mode at high resolution with low compression, or shooting high-resolution movies at high frame rates, or transferring the files quickly to your pc, then a fast card is not needed. If you expect to be doing any of these things then Lexar, Sandisk, Delkin, Transcend, and Kingston all have some very fast models. Many of the CF test reviews like this one are pretty dated.

seems the for my purpose (piont and click photograpgy) the speed of either really won't matter much. thanks guy
