CompactFlash vs. SmartMedia

Hello there folks. Can you help a guy out? I'm looking for a nice portable mp3 player but I'm hearing bad things about SmartMedia (which is the type of media that the player I want takes) and I'm wondering what the fine people of the Anandtech forums can help me w/. Is there one media that is just plain "better"? Please inform...

I'm a fan of CompactFlash.

Mostly because once I accidentally left a 64MB CF card in my pocket and threw it in the washing machine, and the darn thing still works til this day. I hear smartmedia is a lot more fragile.

I have a smartmedia camera and I think its ok. I would prefer Compact flash but I can easily live with smartmedia.

Difference is this
SM - No control chip, just the flash memory on card resulting in a very slim card. Without the control chip the device using the memory is limited on how much memory it can take, though it can be upgrated with a flash upgrade. you are constantly afraid of scratching it.
CF - Has the control chip on it, has wider support, can take a beating.
