and sorry I really don't see what this has to do with stealing from this forum, unless you count anand's click throughs. other sites aren't this one, and esp. anything to do with coupons here....

this hardly affects anandtech, unlike a deal site like fat wallet where affiliate links make up the majority of the income. in fact im not sure it would affect any anandtech links at all.

Yes, Ad-Aware is a very good program. However, running it periodically is what needs to be done. Has anyone taken things a step further? (e.g. - write-protect the directories where the spyware files usually get deposited?)

thanks for the reminder. ran it on my work computer (used by other people as well) and came up with tons of stuff...looks like it also solved a redirection error I was getting in IE as well.

why did i stop reading this thread before your post. i must have ran that program a dozen times but never heard it until i nearly jumped out of my seat! guess i always had the volume turned way down.

I used to use Ad-Aware, but TechTV recommended 'SpyBot Search and Destroy' as finding more spyware that Ad-Aware missed, so I switched. I am happy so far. Here's the link.

I suspect that ditching Internet Explorer and Outlook/Outlook Express would go a long way toward cutting out the malware that can infect your system. I run Mozilla, and I pretty much don't have to worry about that crap anymore. (Went to a site with someone else's computer that only had IE on it, then closed the window...one popup after another kept coming up for a while. :| That kind of sh*t never happens with a properly-configured Mozilla.)

I'll allow that Ad-aware is good at cleaning up a machine that's infected with malware...but it'd be better to not allow your machine to become infected in the first place.

LavaSoft's Ad-Aware is a GREAT free spyware detector! I've been using it for a while now and have never had any complains....You can download the Reference File Updater here or here.....BTW when I ran it for the first time on my parents computer I got an all-time high of 280 instances! ....:disgust:
