My company provides me with a laptop but does not permit its employees to access the internet with it. I travel a lot and would love to have internet access via this laptop. Is there some way that I can possibly use an external hard drive to basically bypass my laptop's main HD which my company monitors.

It seems like I could plug the external HD in via the USB port, but I would have to set the laptop to boot from this drive, right? Also, how would I set up this new hard drive to work?

Anyone have any ideas?

I don't think an external hd will solve your problem. Probably the easiest way is to get a 2nd notebook hd. And swap drives when u want to access the internet. Its not that hard to swap the drives out.

IBM Thinkpads support Ultrabay hard drives, so if you'll get one of those, you can always specify which hard drive you would like to boot from. That should solve the problem for you and nobody will even see that you're using another hard drive

If you do get this to work with a second HD better make sure you empty the recycle bin. Also, some programs do weird things in such a setup like storing temp files within the dormant OS install instead of the active one. I would imagine that it wouldn't be too good for your career if they catch you cheating.

I'd get a completely new harddrive and OS install then switch it out with the current one, and not mess with an external. It will work as long as they dont find out

Though I don't know how they'd feel about you replacing the harddrive every once in awhile

Maybe it's a security issue?

They probably don't want to risk losing sensitive data because some schmuck caught a backdoor over the internet.
