If you like old fonts, an art deco font might work. That gives you the classic appearance of a different time, but something forward thinking and modern.

the font is terrible

I suggest ripping off an idea from here:

http://99designs.com/

Wow some of the designs there are amazing. I really don't want to rip off another design, but I can't afford what they're offering either. $500!?

Do I what I suggested above. Move it to $10 and you will be very surprised how nice they can be.

Any chance somebody here is already a member there and could post it for me?

I tried registering myself, but it says I have to wait 14 days and have 25 posts before I can post in that forum.

I can, PM me with what you want to say, prize $ amount, etc.

Computer company?

Keep it simple. Clean and minimal. I'd even try to make a new name if it's at all possible. "x & Beyond" never really works for anyone, save for Bed, Bath & Beyond.

How big is the company? Is it owned by more than one person?

If my art director came to me with this, I'd catch it on fire (and I've been known to).

You are kidding, right?

Go to a professional if you're actually serious about this "business".

Why? If all he needs is a good logo ten bux and a paypal account can do wonders.

Attitudes like this that sees businesses fail because they don't have any soft of brand or identity strategy, how are you going to stand out, let alone communicate effectively with your customers? You're not.

If you like nostalgia, go for some 50's stuff. Especially artwork inspired by sc-fi or the space race.
There is a whole science to it, something I have a grasp of, but no education to back me up.

So I hired someone to do mine.

I still had to offer ideas or creative inspiration so the artist could throw some proposals, but it's best to get some help.

Do this. Go to your DVD/BluRay collection. if you don't have one, go to best buy, fry's, etc. Look carefully at the cover art and why they chose it. What you want to do is establish a working theme, and why it suits you.
if you find something that grabs your attention, rent it, buy it, whatever...take a look at the opening credits and listen to the theme music. Get immersed.

I think this is easier for the first step. It's too easy to get lost in browsing other logos when needing inspiration.

I like it.

OP, you could also do some pixel art. You really want part of the banner logo to also function as a stand alone logo. For example, the X of Xerox is easily recognizable and functions as a partial logo.

Very 50's, kerning's all over the place, color choice isn't bad, font choice is getting close but not there, and the "+" is usually used for companies/agencies where it's two specific names and whatnot (Wieden + Kennedy, Lloyd (+co), etc...)
