We are currently using XP/Win 7 laptops that have a program that we use that has been developed in house ( SQL database) Our company has now gone the iPad route which is a totally different format. Would it be possible to copy/transfer data over from the MS format to the iPad? This is currently in beta stage and I am one of the testers to see how the iPad apps work. I can save the data in a word format from the laptop and email it to the iPad with some conversion if needed or possible. At this stage, I am just curious to see if it is possible. Thanks

There have been rumors forever of Office coming to the iPad. But the alleged time of that to arrive has already come and gone, so I don't know if the rumors were ever real or not. Even if Office did arrive it may not necessarily do everything regular Office does.

What you could possibly do is remote desktop from the iPad to a Windows machine with Office installed on it and run it remotely like that.

Smart Office 2 can open and edit Office documents. I keep an excel spreadsheet with all of my movies, games and TV shows listed (to avoid accidentally buying another copy), and sometimes I'll edit the dropbox-sync'd file on my iPad.

You can also use GoodReader to view them.

For a business environment that is dependent on office Windows 8 tablets blow the iPad out of the water. Not only do they run a full version of MS Office they also integrate with your existing active directory infrastructure just like any other pc.

If you want an iPad like form factor the Asus VivoTab Smart is one of the better 10.1" Clover Trail tablets, if you don't mind a thicker tablet and higher price then Surface Pro is the way to go.

This. A business thats currently built up and uses MS Office applications and plans to switch to iPads is about one of the dumbest business moves I've heard in a long while.

The second the iPad became an actual threat to the Wintel dynasty that died.

Either that, or an absolute belief that iPad users would not pay $100 for the licence. MS Office does not lose money; it's there so the rest of MS is allowed to lose money.

Could be either, to be honest.

Yeah, you can definitely copy over a Word document and read it on the iPad without installing any additional app. Same for PowerPoint and Excel.

But that's reading. If you want to edit those documents, then the iPad won't do that reliably just yet.

Alternatively, your company can pay a third-party developer to write an app that would allow the iPad to access and modify the database natively. If you can justify the cost, that is.

I hope not, because my own company plans to move to Office 365 next quarter. We at least have Win7 machines though.

I install LibreOffice on my workstations and use them for everything but Sharepoint. Which sucks anyway.
