Compaq Armada Hack

Hi,
I need to power my Compaq Armada directly from my car's power source (12V). However I need detailed information
on the wiring of either (or both) the battery or power adapter.
Unfortunately just connecting the appropriate voltage (+ and - ) does not work as I suspect there is circuitry within the battery and power adapter to stop people like me doing this kind of stuff...
I am keen to learn the technology involved hence my reluctance to just stick an AC inverter and run it from the power adapter.

most recent dell laptops, excepting the p4s, have been 20V 3.5A things. if compaq is similar then you'd need to convert your voltage using a transformer.

The output on the battery states 9.6v the output on the adapter is 18v - the current supply is not an issue and the voltage can easily be modified with a regulator cicuit that I already have. It is the connecting of the + and - and making it work where the issue lies.

line the connectors up right in the battery compartment on a block of wood and stick it in the compartment, hold it on with duct tape

You don't need an inverter. Most laptops have car adapters as accessories. Probably easier to work off one of those.
