I finally got to messing with mine last night...

I am using it right now... I upgraded and de-compaq'ified it. I have added an 80GB 7200RPM Drive, 512MB RAM, Staples FAR Artec 16X DVD Drive (vinyl dyed it black first), swapped out the IDE and floppy cables for rounded ones and added an All in Wonder 9700 Pro.

It is a sweet little box, faily fast and onboard sound is good.

Make sure you check yours when you get it... When I first booted mine up I noticed that the 40GB drive that shipped with it only showed 8.9 GB Free. Turns out Compaq left 18.9 un allocated. I blew both partitions away and am using the 40GB 5400RPM Drive for storage of MPEG's and MP3's and the like.

I see that FIC Just released a New BIOS Update This Morning... I tried to update the BIOS to the latest FIC AM37 BIOS (VLB43) because according to FIC website it should do ATA133, TRhe 80GB drive is a Maxtor ATA133 and it recognizes it as an ATA100. When I try to flash the BIOS it tells me the part number doesn't match and quits... I am assuming because it finds the Compaq Bios in there when it goes to Flash. The flash utility reads and backs up the bios without any trouble. I am a little leary of forcing it.... Maybe tonight.

VLB44 1.2 Award release 2/10/2003
  • Fix: 1. fixed M/B compatiblity with FDD
    2. fixed system can't boot when ATI 8500DV installed

Hi Ziptar, Did yours come with the firewire card? What options did you order? Is the onboard sound 5.1, 4.1, or just stereo. I ordered mine on the 28th and scheduled delivery is 2/26

Mine did come with the Firewire card. I read somewhere the sound is 5.1, I don't know for sure. i am using the 2 JBL's that came with it..

Anyone know what Flash type the AM37 BIOS chip uses?? I would like to order a BIOS Savior before I try flashing the new AM37 BIOS. Specs say 2MB EPROM and it looks to be a PLCC Socket.

Got mine today.Pulled the radeon 9000 card out and gave it to my little girl to surf the www and dload music and burn cd s.
Question= the radeon 9000 does not look like anything on ati site, just heat sink glued to the chip. How do I identify who actually made this card and what its specs should be or where to get drivers to use when I put it in my little fellas new box I am in the process of putting together with all the cheap goodies I have found in this forum
Thanks for all the help from everybody

When did you order it? What did your staples order status give for a delivery date?

Just use the driver from the ATI site. Their Radeon driver is the same for all Radeons. In the readme tt says it works for all Radeons 7000-9700, including even the All-In-Wonder versions of these cards.

Creating Restore CD for 6000Z
Just got mine last night. Got with 256ram, 40G, 7200, ATI 9000, and SB
card. The Ati card comes with lots of extras (surprised) like remote
connection pad and remote control that does many PC functions. I'm not
sure but it may be a PCI card ? will have to look again tonight. Also
came with a fire wire card. Only two small disappointments so far. All
slots are filled and there is essentially no software. Got a Money, Works,
and ATI CD ? that was it. You have to make your OS and system software
disks using the burner. There is an application designed just for this but
the book clearly says this can only be done once. Began to run it and it
will take 6 CDs.

I'm not sure whether to uninstall all the trash software they put on at the
factory (most of what is on the PC) and then create the restore CDs or to
just do it all. Any opinions?

do the Restore CDs first(so if in the future you wish to put it back the way it came you should be able to with those CDs) then do the following

Anyone who got in on this deal.

Check the status of your $50 rebate. I checked online and it said I wasn't eligible but I was like what the fu**?? I called twice to make sure I was filling out the forms and submitting the correct material.

I just called the compaq rebate center and the CSR told me she has resubmitted it and that I will be receiving my rebate check within 14 days.

I think they were trying to keep my $50 rebate check.
