Another $40 for the Radeon 9000 w/TV out sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me.

Yeah, I am thinking now that I should have ordered the 9000.. I have a AIW 9700 Pro but it would have been nice to have one at that price.

checked the order status for the one I ordered yesterday:

Order Date: 1/24/2003
Order Status: Shipped
Scheduled Delivery Date: 02/14/03

Says it shipped but, delivery date didn't change...

I got the same...shipped but 2/11 delivery date. Wierd. Maybe "shipped" status in their system means it has gone to the "assembly center" or something. Cause it changed to shipped status after 1 day.

It took two trips to the store and a call to 800staples, but I finally got the manager to take off the shipping. I am considering as to whether to keep the 940 refurb which does not get rebate or go for the 5550 which does. Currently at 270 w/tax including printer or $225 w/no printer. We will see. I am checking to see if my parents are interested in it.

BUT!!!!! $225 shipped for 6000 w/9000 is a great great deal, still anxious about the motherboard hopefully there were still some nForces in the compaq cupboard!!!!

Can someone tell me (or PM me) how to get the basic configuration of the 6000z for so cheap online? I've tried applying every Staples coupon I could find, but with all of them I had to add several hundred dollars of other stuff in to let me apply the coupons. And if I removed the extra stuff the coupons wouldn't go through on checkout. I really need to get a basic cheap computer for my lil sis to take to college and this would be ideal. Any help would be appreciated.

Staples started blocking the use of other coupons last week. best you can do is order it at a B&M and try to get them to remove the shipping and let you use the $30 off $150 printable coupon thats out there... (no... i don't have it...)

Yes!..Please share the particulars of your order and if the motherboard is a known brand (gigabyte, maybe) and how well (or not) it performs. Did you get restore disks or did you have to make them?

Not sure of what the chipset is, haven't opened it up yet. Seems to run reasonably well. The display adapter is a S3 ProsavageDDR, so it's not a nForce

Comes loaded with tons of worthless crap, a reformat is a must. Has 2 drive partitions, C: is 38gb, and D: is a 2gb restore partition. No idea on how to get to the BIOS, it doesn't even have a Compaq logo or anything on boot, just a black screen that loads the OS in a few seconds. And you don't get an XP home cd or anything, just a proprietary Compaq system restore CD, but you do get a serial. Doesn't take very long at all to boot, maybe 40 seconds or so.

Thanks! So you ordered the 'base' with no ATI 9000? Did it come with a spec sheet or model number? The Compaq order screen indicated that it came with USB2.0 and I've seen some motherboards equiped with enhanced sound systems (5.1) and the KM266 chipset. If you wouldn't mind posting the model and/or serial # that would be informative also. I ordered one with the ATI 9000 on a whim (i also got free shipping) and am now wondering what the heck I'm going to get!

Too cool! Great pics. Google search = FIC AM37 mobo. Looks like two of the PCI slots are already filled!!?? Is one of them the 1394 card?? If it's not, I'm toast!! If it is, then this is a fantastic system for $321. Uh, I think this may have a long shot chance for deal of the month!

Affirmative on the 1394, other slot has a modem, ditching both. And yeah, this has my vote on deal of the month

to get the free shipping I had to go to the B&M and I used my business
rewards gold card which says you get free shipping, but I ordered my system with no video card and no monitor, with the free 32x cdrw and my out the door price before $50 rebate is $313.76 (didn't use the coupon for 30 off 150, didn't want to pooch any chance of this going bad by combining coupons).

now I am thinking about buying the compaq 3820 inkjet printer sku 491628 when you add to the cart it says hp 3820 also the PNY 256mb DDR 499682 with $20 rebate and add the $30 off $150.

and going thru ebates for another 2%

still deciding on the printer and ram

what do you guys think of the additions?

I ordered one of these yesterday with the Radeon 9000 as the only upgrade $351 after tax, I will submit the $50 rebate. I ordered it at the store and asked the manager how could I get out of the overpriced $75 shipping. He told the cashier to take off the shipping. Staple's email and link show the shipping cost included (so the total is $75 higher) so I will monitor this.

More importantly - I called staples who called compaq and gave me the following hard to get info:

USB ports are version 1.1
there are 2 free pci slots (the third is used by the modem)
the integrated video shares either 32 or 64mb, they are not sure...
the Radeon 9000 goes in the AGP slot - this may seem obvious but there is a PCI version and the web site does not specify which one.

There are a lot of discussions about overclocking the athlon, is anyone going to try this on this machine?

For the nimrod with the dell (not disrespecting dell in general I own one), I beat your deal by over a hundred with a considerably faster machine and I for one don't appreciate your crapping. We are a family here at anandtech and your post ignores that fact and has absolutely no purpose. All of us have gotten a deal that hundreds of others have missed and vice versa. At this time, this is the best deal going IMO and if you don't agree then go somewhere else and leave this thread and us alone.

I've read the mobo manual and the 5.1 sound looks like an option in the south bridge. Can anyone confirm that the Compaq has that. Re: the Dell, probably a great machine but the compaq has a MUCH more powerful processor (the new p4 based celerons pretty much bite), looks to have 1394 support (important for my DV) and you paid more. For me, this Compaq looks very sweet and if I can connect the kid's 4.1 rig would be perfect.
