Perhaps price varies by location? In my local Sunday 11/5/2006 local BB ad I see similar unit @ page 36 for $599. And that's for TOSHIBA laptop with 14" viewable screen. Everything else spec wise is the same as you have it. I search through the ad and that's the lowest price they've for laptop.

Check OP's info - it comes w/T2050 processor. It's the same in my local BB ad.

The ad I looked at for the $499.99 Compaq says T2050 processor but shows a SKU 8121908 which says it has Intel® Core? Solo processor T1350. Something is off - either the ad or the site. If anybody gets this please post here which processor it is.

edit: From John's post, it would appear that the ad is in error and it is not a Core Duo T2050 but a Core Solo T1350.

eeh, not that great i'd say. the BF deal is rumored to be better and after tax you might end up better with a dell + some coupons.

Ok, I just went to Best Buy and the typical CSR in the computer dept. (the blue shirt people) said they didn't have any, so I asked the Geek Squad guy if he would mind checking availability on it since the ad stated "minimum 5 per store" and the local address was on the side. He went behind the wall where they keep the laptops and after a min. or two he called for a manager. I see them getting a ladder and eventually he brought one out to me. The box wasn;t crushed either. I thanked him for being polite and honest. However it's a Core Solo 1350 1.86GHz , but this is a better buy than the Wal-Mart Compaq V5305WM and should net a nice profit on eBay.

My local BB online ad was for the same specs as in OP (T2050 proc.) so I went to buy one and was told that the specs in the ad are an error and the sale price applies to a core solo machine w/all same specs otherwise. Not bad, but not what I wanted and not nearly as good as the advertised system so I passed.

Didnt feel like waiting in line at wal marts so i got this. I just called best buy last night, told them to put one on hold and i went and got it. Solo is not bad, probably quicker then the sempron. Has a dual layer dvd burner. Came with a Vista rebate. Only negative is no card slots.

I had the Wal-Mart $398 Compaq special with Mobile Sempron 3300+ & 512MB DDR pitted against my $499 Compaq special with T1350 & 512MB. Memtest86+ on the 3300+ finished one pass in 12 min and it took my T1350 14 min. Granted that is the only benchmark I ran, and in the end I kept the Core Solo for the battery life & DVDRW. The brightview widescreen LCD's they use on these budget notebooks are a real treat.

AMD pwns for memory access speed/latency due to integrated controller

Not a bad deal. My i6000 I got off of FS/FT is looking more dated every day... lol.
