oh god, i hope that compaq made their cases a little bit better....I've had to deal with these crappy *huge* *heavy* compaq cases that to put 1 more stick of ram in, you need to take the cpu out, a couple PCI cards and hope that you don't break anything that you take out and put back in...

Sounds like an awesome computer for programs that are multi-threaded, and maybe for those that even aren't!

(Tiger's price is $1999)

Are these Foster Xeons or Prestonia Xeons? They both come in the 2.0Ghz speed. The Prestonias are probably the prefered chip as they feature a 512KB L2 cache as opposed to only 256KB L2 cache for the Fosters. Also, the Prestonias feature Hyperthreading support though you won't be able to make use of it with win2k Pro anway since it only supports 2 cpus. To take advantage of hyperthreading on a dual Prestonia system you'll need either win2k server which will recognise 4 cpus or windows XP proffesional which will recognise 2 physical cpus but more than 2 logical cpus. XP can apparently distinguish between phyisical and logical cpus and therefore will allow you to use more than 2 logical cpus even though it doesn't allow more than 2 physical cpus. Win2k doesn't recognise the difference between physical and logical CPUs since hyperthreading didn't exist at the time win2k was created.

This may not be a bad deal, but you might be able to build your own dual Xeon system fairly cheap also. On May 26 there was a big price cut on the P4 Xeon DPs. Pretty soon the 2.2Ghz chips should be in the $300 each or less price range. Intel is selling them in lots of thousands for $262 after this big price cut. So, as you can see these chips are fairly cheap now. The big price cuts and the introduction of the 2.4Ghz chips are probably the reasons your seeing deals like this on 2.0 systems. A couple of good workstation boards are the Supermicro P4DC6, P4DC6+, P4DCE, P4DCE+, and the Iwill DP400. The cheapest one would be the P4DCE or P4DCE+ which can likely be found for less than $400.

LOL... I work for Compaq [now HP] in their Omaha plant. We were building these Workstations for Tiger Direct just last week. And we built a lot of em. They are Fosters.

Hell, the assembly line was just building them last night. (I work at the omaha plant too.) Too bad they managed to fry 12 of those motherboards last night.

And these cases are spacious. You don't need to remove anything but the memory that's in there now to add more.

From the tigerdirect website:

Highest Performance Intel Technology
The Evo Workstation W6000 uses the newest Intel® Xeon? processor with 512KB of total, full-speed L2 cache with a front side bus speed of 400 MHz. The new Evo Workstation W6000 supports up to two Intel® Xeon? processors. Processor speed is 2.0 GHz

512KB cache? Sounds like the new ones, but can't be sure from just the web page.

Typical TigerDirect. They almost always screw up something with the description. I have not figured out yet whether it's on purpose or they are just inept. Is it the Prestonias with 512KB L2 cache or the Fosters with 256KB L2 cache? I would believe our AT brother before I would believe TD.

Yo... wahhee... well since we work 3 day weeks I had to call it last week BTW peeps, the reason the boards fry is because the CPUs are not seated all the way or have pins bent under... the newbies we have puttin the CPUs on the boards

The biggest bitch about the EVO [black] cases is that they scratch so damn easy. And unless we built different 6000 models all the ones my team did were Fosters... 256kb onboard cache.

wahhee you have peeked my interest. Who are you? This is Terry F.

Intel website says speeds below 1.7Ghz have 256KB and speeds have 512KB cache. Since tigerdirect machines have 2Ghz, would they be the newer CPUs?

Called Tigerdirect and at one point they were not even sure that the boxes were not 2*1Ghz boxes!

This would be an awesome computer if it weren't:
A. Compaq/HP
B. Tigerdirect

As per this, If it is model 470021-785 its 256 cache and if this 470031-197 would be 512. Tiger direct lists 249901-B21 as the part number, although it doesn't show on the Evo site. The 24...b21 looks more likely to be the video card part number, even though that doesn't line up either. It looks like it should have AGP PRO, but I don't know if the card they're selling in it is AGP Pro, anyone know about the Matrox card, sounds like a cheap replacement. Compaq has a 350 rebate on these systems right now.
The way I look at it is I bet the Tigerdirect screwed up. I bet as our friends at the factory state, its the 256 cache, which lowers the value by like 500 or so. You can order the same config from Compaq for an estimated 2500 (3k for the dual 512 processor) minus the 350 rebate. aka about the same price without the hastle. If compaq is killing this model, and not reving sales through their vendor, we should see this at a much better deal on Compaq's site itself like we did the dual sp850 machine late last year that was 850 for the dual 933 xeon processors to which I am a proud owner.

Waiting and Watching.
Edit, I misrepresented the info on the rebate. It appears to be instant and 480 dollars at the online store.
I called a TD sales person to inquire about a possible mis representation. The model number the have is only w6000, but he is looking into it and I should receive an email about this in the morning.

um, this thing is almost $3k if configured at compaq, because you have to add the 2nd processor as an option.

it also says that the 2.0 ghz has 512k each

Confirmed with a tigerdirect rep that the Cache is only 256KB, so these Xeons are almost regular P4s.

Note that they have taken off all references to the cache from the web page.

Asked them if they would drop the price now that the deal is not hot and they said no.
