I just ordered one today, but I went with 1.8GHz, 15" UXGA screen (Guess I'll be cranking up the Windows font sizes, eh?) and 64MB Video RAM then cheaped out on the other things that I could upgrade down the road.

Does anyone have any experience with their manufacturing times? The person on the phone said it would take *TWELVE* days to build it, which I think it BS. Anyways, I can't wait for the lappy.

Yeah that's a desktop P4, so your battery life is going to suffer.

Do you know how badly the battery life is going to suffer with the desktop version CPU? Also, what kind of performance difference is there between the desktop 2.2Ghz and the Mobile 1.6Ghz CPUs?

Does anyone know if you can use the 150$ off coupon AND the 100$ rebate?

Or um, how to circumvent taxes? I know you don't pay taxes ordering from amazon, if you don't mind a 1.4 prebuilt model, but they're not in stock indefinitely.

1) According to compaq then the $100 rebate is for retail only. $150 for web. In the end then the build your own is much cheaper than retail. Anyway, I bought from online but will try to use the rebate also. On the papers then the only hint it gives that you cant use the rebate is something like "you cant use the rebate combined with any other promotions". But we'll see.

2) Taxes and shipping are INSANE! $115 just for taxes PLUS another $50 for shipping? Holy crap! I guess thats evened out by the $150 discount but still. As a cheap as hell buyer then I hate the idea of paying taxes on something purchased online. Hopefully the rebate works and makes me feel better.

Well with the 150 off and the education rebate linked above mine came out to be 1709 after taxes and shipping. Thats with a 1.6G, 128 megs ram, (upgrade a 256 meg yourself for 60 bucks) 30g hd, dvd/cdrw, and 15in svga+.

I doubt the rebate will work after that, so its a warm deal.

Amazon has the preconfigured 1.4G, 20g hd, 14in LCD, dvd/cdrw, and 256 megs (in two slots) which to me is as good as 128 megs because one of them's going bye bye. This is 1700 shipped, but with 100 rebate and 200 amazon credit, so its more like 1400. But its also out of stock.

I figure both are priced about right, in comparison with each other. But the amazon one is adequate for now, meaning in a few months most of us will be lusting after yet another...

BTW, I have confirmed the Radeon 7500's 32 megs is user upgradeable, so don't be paying the 149 extra for 32 megs installed.

Dilemas dilemas...

You know, I can't be sure, but there are several factors that make me believe the power drain would certainly be a factor with using desktop P4s in notebooks:
1) Desktop P4s have higher voltage requirements
2) Desktop P4s run hotter due to the increased speed and voltage = the fans have to do more work which eats power
3) Desktop P4s don't have SpeedStep. Mobile P4s clock down proportional to load. It's a dynamic clock so when you're word processing it's only running like 1.2GHz, but when you start a game it kicks upto the max speed.

Other than that, I can't think of any other differences. The performance of a desktop P4 is bound to be faster since they run at higher speeds, but clock per clock they're the exact same chip.

WHOA!!! details! details!! details!! please fro the love of god! (sorry, this is big news for me)

So can you point me to a link, or tell me some info on how you go about upgrading this stuff? I wanna know.

Judgeing from the anandtech reviews and pictures, it is NOT upgradeable.

i am "borrowing" one right now from costco and there is nowhere for a user upgradeable card to go. The only things that are user accessible are memory and for some reason the modem on a chip. So maybe you have to open the thing up to get to it, but i've been following this thing since it came out and I never heard of a way to upgrade the vid card. So any details would be nice.

While I'm here, i do have a dilemna. I ordered only 128MB ram because i was going to buy more 3rd party. 256MB costs around $60-70 while at BB this week 128MB only costs $12.99 (after rebate). So is it stupid to run XP on only 256mb and just wait until mem prices drop again or will XP run too slowly unless its got much more than 256?

Here is a letter I got from compaq tech support. I'd imagine you may have to open up the lappy for this delicate operation, ie take out the keyboard...

Dear Steve,

Thank you for contacting Compaq E-Support, a part of the new HP.

I would like to inform you that the video memory is user upgradable up
to 64MB. You need to purchase the extra memory and install it.For
information on sales of Compaq Presario products, contact our Presario
Option Group-Sales at 1-800-888-0220 and choose Option 3. We will be
happy to assist you for information on Presario products.

Thank you for taking the time to contact us.

Regards,
Lakshmi Ranganathan

Thanks!

That's disappointing... Can you tell me if the video memory is user
upgradable as well? from 32 to 64?

Dear Steve,

I apologize for the earlier communication, and for any inconvenience
this may have caused you.

I would like to inform you that the 256 MB has been split in to two
128MB modules and has been installed over the two slots. Therefore
there
are no free slots available as for now. But you can upgrade the
system's
memory up to 1.0GB by installing a maximum of 512MB in each of the
slots.

The Compaq Memory Configurator identifies the appropriate memory
upgrades available for the Presario Desktop and Notebook PC. This
easy-to-use tool enables quick identification and online purchasing of
the available Compaq memory upgrades specific to the system.

For more information on Compaq Memory Configurator and for online
purchase of memory modules, please visit the following website:

http://www.compaq.com/athome/redirect/memory/0042-0009.html

The part numbers of the memory modules are:

128 MB 266MHz Memory Module 269085-B25
256 MB 266MHz Module 269086-B25
512 MB 266MHz Module 269087-B25
I hope these suggestions should have helped you. If you have any
further
clarifications, feel free to contact me and I will be happy to help you
further.

Thank you for taking the time to contact us.

Regards,
Lakshmi Ranganathan

You're not upgrading the video card, you're upgrading the ram. I'd imagine it'd be a 32 meg DDR sodimm module that will look identical to the one for main memory. Clearly Arima (makers of the PResario - no Compaq doesn't make it) isn't going to differentiate hardware too much in terms of a 32 meg or 64 meg video lappy. It'd be easier for them and for Compaq if this was user upgradeable.

XP will run fine on 256 megs, of course. a 512 meg PC2100 DDR sodiumm is hard to find right now, not to mention expensive. But the 256 meg modules are 60-70 bucks, and the prices on those aren't nearly as volitile as the ones for desktops.

If you got the 2805US preconfig'd machine, you'll have to take out atleast one module, as I confirmed above. I suggest going for a BYO with 1 module of 128 or 256.

Is that all the info you have? I have the feeling that the CSR just didn't know what he/she was talking about. Go take a look at the pictures from the review done here at anandtech. It doesn't seem possible. Of course, I could be wrong, and this is still a curious subject. I am interested to know if anyone has tried it yet. I will be ordering one of these in the next few days, and if I feel up to it when I get it, I might take it apart and have a look. I am still looking for anywhere on the internet that says people have tried upgrading it or anything of the sort.

If you could get a price and or a part number that would be really awesome. I think compaq has an online parts store.

Thanks for the info

- David

thats a PM that I just sent to busmaster11

I just looked more closely at anand's review of this laptop, and judging from the pictures and what he says, the memory is mounted on the motherboard, making it unreasonable, and basically impossible to add or remove the memory.

this is a very curious subject, and i would like to know if this really is upgradeable.
