the only thing i regret about x1000 is the cd-rw/dvd drive isn't modular, you can't replace it with a modular battery

if it had that it would be just a perfect, nice, good performance laptop

anyone that has tested D800 can tell about the build quality of x1000 vs D800 ? it looks like x1000 has a good aluminium case but anyone compared it with the D800?

I ordered 2 of the following config, one for me and one for my brother (we're both college students):

Selected Features
Processor Intel Pentium-M 1.3GHz
Operating System XP Home Operating System.
Application Software MS Works/Money/Encarta.,
Display 15.4" WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050)
Memory 128MB DDR SDRAM
Graphics Card 32MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9200
Hard Drive 40GB 4200RPM HDD
Primary CD/DVD Drive DVD-CDRW Drive
Communication 802.11b WiFi Wireless LAN
Primary Battery High capacity 8 cell LiION
Scanner None
Warranty Upgrade None
Carrying Case None
All-In-One None
Printer None
Digital Camera None
Printer Cables None

$1196.14 - $100MIR = $1096.14

IMHO, this was the best bang for the buck config. I went to Fry's to check out this laptop, and I came away extremely excited and anxious for mine to ship.

Also, I think the WSXGA screen upgrade is worth every penny. The Fry's demo only had the WXGA option, and while the screen was razor sharp and clear at it's native resolution, it failed the widescreen test of usefulness: I displayed two full page documents side-by-side on screen, and the text was illegible. A WSXGA screen compromises real estate with readability beautifully.

I was impressed by its dimensions; although not as good as a 15" Powerbook, it is still more thin and light than comparable desktop replacement notebooks. The construction was solid; it is a sleek looking unit (not too flashy, but definitely noticable); the keyboard was roomy and had great feedback; I loved the touchpad and loved the scrollpad even more; and the laptop was quite cool to the touch (unlike other demo units). Performance for the 1.3GHz demo unit was peppy with everything I tried.

Just called Compaq to see if I can cancel the order.
Gonna register as a student (I take courses in a local university here, so I have student ID and email) and then order again.
They'll let me know tomorrow if it was cancelled. If not, no big deal.

Apparently since I am not taking a class this quarter, the university has deactivated my email address. I still have an email address from my alma-matter.
Does HP check if you are still an active student?

I wouldn't recommend using the academic program if you're not a student...I'm *sure* they double check these things, I know on the site they speak about audits.

Yeah, but on that site, it says if they find out you are not a student, all they do is charge you the price difference between academic and non-academic pricing. So you can't lose anything.

well, the model @ microcenter doesn't heat up @ all, but then again, the battery is not in the system. whilst this is the case, acer travemate definitly heats up more than the compaq x1000

Are you guys going to be kicking yourselves when the Mobility 9600 Pro shows up as an option on the X1000?

I'd love to buy one right now and take advantage of all the discounts but with the 9600 just around the corner I just can't do it.

The 9600 is a DirectX 9 card and the 9200 is only DirectX 8.

I guess if you're not a gamer then it really doesn't matter.

Aye, not much of a gamer; but when HL2 comes out I'll upgrade my desktop maybe

I've been waiting for DVD+RW option to come out.
Does anyone know when? I know that it says this summer, but now it's summer.

Also does it really have screen burn problem in WUXGA as in Dell D800 and I8500?

My X1000 should ship by Tuesday. I ordered July 2nd. To the guy asking, no I never got a final order confirmation either.

Supertool- A 7500 Mobility should play whatever you throw at it within reason. I had NO problems with the 7500 on the Laptop I just sold. Played all the current games and any videos or dvds I tried.

Here's the X1000 config I ordered:

Pentium-M 1.5 Ghz
512 MB DDR
15.4" WUGXA (1920x1200) Widescreen
64 MB ATI 9200 Mobility
80 GB 4200 HD
DVD/CDRW
802.11b + Bluetooth
3 USB 2.0
Firewire
Integrated SD/MMC digital media slot
FIR (Infrared port)
Universal A/C Slimline Adapter.
S-video TV-out port.
Touch pad with on/off and dedicated scroll up/down surface
Built-in JBL Pro Stereo speakers
Type I/II PCMCIA slot
Over 4 hours of battery life

Total $1668.14 after $100 rebate.

Yeah, I'm not really a gamer, and the 9600 upgrade will probably be a $100+ option; I wanted to keep the cost under $1100.

As for the new 2MB Centrinos, while that would have been nice, it would have also cost a bit more money. And the current ones are plenty fast for 99% of my student-oriented tasks.

1. All manufacturer's include a restore CD to bring the system back to its start state.
2. Student discount works by going through the academic program link on the HP Shopping page (its on the left). You just select your state, school, info, etc...then it shows up as an "Employee Discount"
3. Go to Crucial and just select through to the X1000. Its PC2100.

The Radeon 9200 is a little slower than Ti4200, but it draws less power. I think you still get the modem if you order wireless, it seems reasonable, but you should double check with compaq beforehand.
