Compaq X1000?

I was just wondering when the Canadian version is going to come out. Is it going to be identical to the X1000 and what will the Canadian model be called?

Check eBay for RAM. I picked up two 256MB Infineon DDR modules pulled from a Compaq laptop for $55.

And do you think they'll have the promos that the americans have? Argh..i'm so disgusted at how Canadians get ripped off on all the deals. Just comparing the dell.com deals to the dell.ca deals..i was really surprised

i was planning on getting the x1000 in the states and bring it back into Canada..but turns out..their warantee isn't transferrable. My plans foiled again

I think I'm going to buy this laptop for my sister since she is going to colleg in the fall.

Two questions, though:

1. Would the Radeon 7500 be enough for non-fps games like Warcraft/Starcraft, Rollercoaster Tycoon, etc? Even if I wanted to play FPS games, would it be unbearable if I used the Radeon 7500?

2. This laptop would mainly for email, word processing (sister don't do much on computer). Should I just spend the extra 50 bux for the WSXGA+ anyway? Is it worth 50 extra bux?

-Wow. Is this really true? I would love to buy this laptop, but I was afraid I would be stuck with the 9200 forever and not be able to play the newest games. Is there a slot on the bottom of the laptop or something? They'd prob offer the card for hundreds of dollars since we're buying the card separate right?

BTW, will the 9200 play the latest games like Raven Shield, Midnight Club 2, or even Doom3?

Lastly, is this Compaq X1000 with the 64mb Radeon 9200 considered a mobile gaming laptop?

Through my talks with them, it isnt a user upgradeable item. It isnt integrated and can be switched, but you would really want the service center to do it. From what I was told, the labor would be free, even if it wasnt a repair of a broken item. User would just need to pay for the (probably $400) part.

I would wait for the Mobility 9600 to show up as an option. I wouldn't settle for the 9200 hopeing it's upgradable to the 9600. Even if it is upgradeable, it's probably going to cost a fortune. You're better off waiting a couple more months.

Newer games coming out are going to use DirectX 9 and the 9200 is a DirectX 8 card.

How many RAM slots are user accessible? I've heard from some people that only 1 slot can be accessed from the panel on the bottom.

i dunno, what i am heard, the current centrino chipset doesn't support dx9 , so we probably have to wait till intel release dorthan mobile chipset to be able to use the r9600 v -card. could be a while for waiting....

True, if you have the time to wait, wait for it to be an option. If you dont have the time, there is a dang good chance... no a GREAT chance... that you can have the vid card upgraded.

Anyone else bothered by the fact that is combo drive is very slow. 8x write speeds. And the drive is fixed, not modular, so you can't upgrade later.

Despite what the Compaq website says, the drive is 24x10x24. Best Buy, Amazon, Laptop magazine, and well, my brother who has a x1000 has confirmed it.

Mine arrived in town this morning. Can't wait to get it.

I only have 128 mb of RAM right now, 'cause I didn't order the other ones, as I didn't expect them to ship it 2-day FedEx (for free) and within 5 days of ordering it. Will it run like ass with 128 mb or can I at least do the basic things like e-mail, web, etc.?

<-- Hasn't had 128 mb of RAM in years. Don't know WinXP Pro handling abilities.

Is CENTRON RAM any good? I've got a place in town I can pick up a 512 mb RAM stick for $99.99 ... it also has a lifetime warranty.

I already have my laptop, but this 128mb of RAM is damn restricting .
