Comparing X2 & Conroe

Any of you guys may own an X2 or a Pentium D before.....

When you compare the two, X2 boots windows XP faster than Pentium D..
And when you're in the XP environment, clicking folders, launching programs, deleting recycle bins & etc...X2 seemed to be snappier than the Pentium D...the Pentium sometimes suffers a delay in its reflexes...

Those of you who own a Conroe now, and happened to own or used a Pentium D & X2 before..

Is Conroe more snappier than both Pentium D & X2..Or its the same with Pentium D, and but only differs on the loading time of programs....

I mean how fast does conroe boot to XP compare to PD & X2????

I came from an overclocked 4400+ X2.

Conroe is much snappier IMHO. Of course it is all relative, and your RAM and storage setup has a lot to do with it too.

I'd guess that the difference in responsiveness has more to do with Core's prefetching ability than anything else.
But I'm surprised people are describing it as noticably more responsive than the X2, especially considering the K8, since its introduction, has been renowned for its 'snap' factor.
Maybe K8L will change this.

I'd call it wishful thinking. Or coming from a system with a lousy I/O subsystem. There is a "snappyness" difference between single- and dualcore systems, but there is virtually no difference between P-D, X2 and C2D when doing the day to day tasks as described by the OP or switching tasks.

Maybe re-installing windows every 3 months doesnt cut it. Maybe one has to actually take care of the system and not install every garbage beta driver companies throw at you.

That's why I'm holding off upgrading. Everytime I dump $$ into a new CPU, I bring up Windows and I'm like "uh, so this is it?" I've never noticed anything in general 2d desktop applications from a CPU upgrade, personally. And I have to say I envy those who do, cause I remember my first two times I was pretty bummed (maybe going from a Celeron 450Mhx to 1Ghz, IIRC).

I didn't change platforms, I just upgraded from a 3800 X2 to a 4800 X2. Some of the benchmarks I ran showed a 20-30% increase, but I don't really feel it.
I think the big pull of Conroe is that in most cases you can increase the processing speed by 30-50% by overclocking.

Yes that's true. You get maybe a 20% performance advantage (estimated guess) over a similarly clocked AMD X2 and then you can increase that to 50% as you said from an easy overclock.

I started in 2000 with a P3 550mhz with 256ram then upgraded to a 2.53 P4 in 2003. Now I am getting the Core 2 6400 in about 2 days from ewiz.com and I hope to see the same jump I saw when I bought the P4. If not, I shall curse all that have recommended the upgrade. Really, I upgraded to see a HUGE jump in gameplay. I am moving from an X700 AGP card to a x1900xt PCI X card, pair that with a core 2 and I should be playing BF2 on ULTRA settings!!!
