can someone run a quick comparison of the 6800 series cards. from best performing down?

i'm a bit confused reading about a 6800nu, 6800, and the 6800gt.

i didn't know there was a GTO card.

yeah but that's a really good comparison. thanks.

so what's the best bang for the buck? what's all this stuff about unlocking pipelines and things?

6800NU is worthless unless you want to try a mod to enable the texture pipes...otherwise, get a 6600GT...or for faster fer, get a 6800GT

GTO is an oem card, i believe dell puts it in their machines, same thing as the GT with slightly lower clocked memory, i believe.

I'm pretty sure the 6800nu beats out the 6600GT almost all the time (I think).
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. In any case, most of the time the 6800 and the 6600GT are within +/- 3% of each other. Link IMHO, the 6800 is the worst bang for the buck vid card out there.

Lower clocked memory, lower clocked core and 4 less pipelines, taking it down to 12.

Some people have had luck re-enabling the other 4 - doesn't always work though

6800GT is the best bang per buck card out

I disagree. Bank for the buck in video cards can be measured in frames per dollar. With that in mind, both the 6600GT and the X800 XL are a better value than the 6800GT. Look at this link for example. The 6600GT performs within 80% to 98% of the 6800GT depending which resolution you look at. That means that the 6600GT gives you around 80% of the performance at about half the price of a 6800GT. I think the numbers are clear. 6600GT>6800GT on value. The X800 XL would fall between the 6600GT and the 6800GT on value.

Another way to look at it is what screen resolution you want to game at. If 1024x768 is fine for you, get a 6600GT. For 1280x1024 and higher a 6600GT may be too slow for some games, so the 6800GT makes more sense.

Also, for PCI-E slot instead of AGP, consider the ATI X800XL instead of the 6800GT.

You forgot X800 XL in between the X800 Pro and the X700XT.

BTW the x800 XL and 6800GT are very close in performance (except Doom 3) but the 6800GT is about $100-50 more.

really... hmmmm so right now... leaning towards the x800xl if it costs 50-100 less.

how much does the x800xt and the x850xt run... and are they worth the extra amount of money?

the x800XT (when I looked last) was about $600 CAD, which means about $480 american. And no, it isn't really worth the extra money, in my opinion. I myself plan on getting a vanilla 6800 and softmodding it to an Ultra (of course, with a better cooling solution..)

Check newegg.com for current prices and IMHO, no they are not worth the money.

Just make sure that a PCI-E card works with your current system before you buy. If you have AGP, you can find 6800GT's close to $300 if you shop around.

Well you can do what I did & buy a used evga 6800gt for $260 (overclocked it to ultra speeds). Look in the for sale/trade forum or ebay.

purely speed wise:
x850XT PE > x800XT PE >6800UEE > 6800U > x850XT = x800XT > X800XL > 6800GT > x850 Pro > x800 Pro > X800=x700XT(dosent exist in retail and never will) > 6600GT> x700 Pro > >6600 > X600xt > X600 > 6200 > X300 > X300se = 6200TC[/quote]

feature wise, all 6xxx series have DX9c support while All ATI X series cards have DX 9.0B support. not too much of a difference, but can sway your buying choice if the price is close.

Yes, the 9800 is still a good card, though it's beginning to show it's age. Don't expect 1600x1200 with AA and AF, but if you honestly don't care about that, buy it.
