Compatibility Mode Paging

My computer comes up in MS Dos Compatibility mode paging every once in a while. I shows that my hard drives, C, D and E are affected. I'm running Win98SE and I've not too recently added a second hard drive. My primary hard drive is partitioned and used to be C and D.

When I added the second hard drive it became D and my partiton moved to E. Is that correct?

In the device manager, my disk drive (generic ide) and my hard disk contoller (primary IDE controller (dual fifo)) showed to have problems. The controller had the red X sign and the disk drive had the yellow ! sign.

Why would my computer boot up in MS Dos Compatibility sometimes and not all the time?

I have the same roblem with ll my drives going to what you said.

a7v133
1.2ghz Tbird 200FSB
256 pc133 ram
ibm 60 gig ATA 100 HD

Anybody have a clue?

the drivers for the ide controllers shouldn't have problems...that's prob why it's doing that DOS compatibility deal...what does the error message say?...

MS-DOS Compatibility Mode is something you should troubleshoot methodically and carefully. The MSKB has the best information on it I've seen.

This MSKB article and the links from it to other articles cover all the bases. You shouldn't lightly dismiss any of the possibilities presented. Go through the troubleshooting paradigm carefully and thoroughly. You'll get the system sorted out.

For my problem.... I installed WIn 98 SE and everything ran great!! I then flahsed the BIOS from 1002A-1 to 1004 for my ASUS a7v133 Mainboard. I also have an ATA 100 IBM Drive.

After I flashed the BIOS I rebooted and the problem arose. I tried every problem listed virus to drivers for IDE Controller in device manager, etc....

Here is what solved my problem.

I simple reinstalled the PROMISE ATA 100 Controller from from the ASUS CD-ROM. This driver is listed in Device manager under SCSI devices.

Yes, sounds like the drivers are failing to load or getting corrupted, which of course will cause your system to go into compatibility mode. THis is common with bad drivers for ATA66/100 controllers especially.

The help here has been excellent, but I didn't see anyone mention the 4in1 drivers (although I someone doubt that's the problem). Just curious because the ViaTech busmaster driver is different from the standard windows driver.
