Not bad. Hopefully a more complete 2000 series lineup will help depress prices as a whole this summer.

Check out the Unreal 3 engine benchmarks.
The 2900XT kills the 8800GTX

http://www.legitreviews.com/article/503/8/

And yes, competition is always good.
It will only get better after the launch of the rest of the ATI cards.

oh noes ... not me !
-- from Day One i wanted one ... two ...

i was asking the OP ... i was under the impression that his earlier posts conveyed the idea that the hd2900xt was somehow not competitive with the 640 GTS
... and of course, IF it was not competitive, why would they reduces prices on the GTS since the hd2900xt cannot be found for under $420 or so?

Is it a marketing device to make sales of the new AMD card less attractive to buyers ?
[if so, i like it ... smart]]

Unreal 3 - DX10

R6:V = DX9 Bad Console port

If you look at the Lost Planet DX10 demo you will see the $300 GTS stomping the shizzle out of the $400 2900.

"As you can imagine, AMD had something to say about the DX10 demo because it was co-developed by NVIDA under its The Way Its Meant To Be Played program.
This is what AMD had to say:
Before you begin testing, there are a few points I want to convey about ?Lost Planet?.
?Lost Planet? is an Nvidia-sponsored title, and one that Nvidia has had a chance to look at and optimize their drivers for.
The developer has not made us aware of this new benchmark, and as such the ATI Radeon driver team has not had the opportunity explore how the benchmark uses our hardware and optimize in a similar fashion.
Over the next little while AMD will be looking at this, but in the meantime, please note that whatever performance you see will not be reflective of what gamers will experience in the final build of the game."

Sour grapes, they have been claiming everything from drivers, to optimizations, to Martians for the beating they are taking.

Correct me if I am wrong but one retailer selling the card for $309 is not really indicative of any pressure being put on by nvidia itself. I think maybe people are reading too heavily into this. If nvidia slashed prices of the 640 across the board for all partners and distributors, then maybe we can say that they are going for the throat.

You're wrong.
Here is Newegg selling it for $319

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130071

And Buy.com $319 with free shipping.
TigerDirect at $329

Bad ports.

These are in no way indicative of how a finely tuned PC version of the UE3 engine will perform.

When the 8800GTX scores 1 fps higher than the 8800GTS 320mb, I would say the engine is borked.

you mean a 320gts that is overclocked to GTX speeds

maybe this is just the first retailer with the rebate ... isn't eVGA an "important" Partner?

at this point, i would go for the 640 GTS ... $309 vs $420 for the XT is kinda hard [even for me] to justify

Yeah, the same one that has 42% the RAM, 83% the memory bandwidth and only 75% the shader power of a stock 8800GTX.

Yeah, that one.

You sure? the only thing different about the 8800GTS320 and the 8800GT640 is the framebuffer size.

Oh wow, HD2900XT outperforming the 8800GTX in one game. That's great!

http://www.legitreviews.com/article/503/13/

If you are looking at the high end, the GeForce 8800 GTX/Ultra is still king and the GeForce 8800 GTS is my recommendation over the Radeon HD 2900XT, with the few caveats mentioned above (power and heat.)

Maybe AMD should enter the space heating business.

yes but the difference between a GTS and GTX, like what he is comparing here, is that.

64bit more memory bus, 32 more shaders, 128mb (or 348mb) more memory. so clock for clock the GTX should still be quite abit faster.

of course theres zero in it between GTS models untill you start cranking the resolution

Is there DX10 numbers out? All Ive seen is FS and they only did DX9. That being said, the 2900XT was much faster than the GTS in all resolutions.

"Stop the press! The HD 2900XT is top dog at all resolutions in Rainbow Six: Vegas which was a very pleasant surprise." -quote from legit reviews.

All resolutions huh? 1024x768 - 1600x1200 does not all resolutions make. And it appears that every res they cranked up, the 2900XT loses a greater percentage of steam over it's adversary.

1024x768:
2900XT..........86
8800GTX........63

Go up 1 res to 1280x1024 and:

2900XT..........66 - loses 20fps
8800GTX........52 - loses 11fps

Go up 1 res to 1600x1200 and:

2900XT..........47 - loses 19fps
8800GTX.......39 - loses 13fps

So the higher they went, the more the 2900XT struggles to keep any lead.

Wonder what a res higher would bring?

Its not like we arent used to it, everytime ATi releases a product they somehow find flaws to make up for it

X800 was faster, BUT OH NOES, IT DIDNT HAVE SM3/HDR!! (nevermind that the 6800 series would never use it with decent performance)

X1900 was faster, BUT OH NOES, IT WAS LOUDER/HAD HIGHER POWER CONSUMPTION...

Same scenario right now, get over it, HD2900XT > 8800GTS

8800GTX is still the king, why all this ruckus?
