in terms of it being competitive with a 'need' of some sort of prior training and a source of recreation for audience, yes it is a sport. Is it an athletic sport? obviously no.

A sport nowadays is something where a winner and a loser are declared.

So having sex or not is a sport.
Playing Connect Four can be considered as a sport.
Little League Soccer where no points are used is NOT a sport.
Pee wee football where both teams are considered winners is NOT a sport.

Anytime there are copious amounts of food consumed and someone wins and some loses they are either watching or playing a sport.

Sport = requires athletic ability of some sort...strength, technique, speed, combination thereof. Athleticism is key here.

Golf is a sport because it takes strength and technique to hit the ball properly. Chess is not, because chess is a mental skill. Football is a sport because...well duh. Video games are not, because manipulating a controller is a skill, not athletic.

Etc.

I'd say that makes competitive eating a sport.

Golf is NOT a sport, it is a competitive game where the lowest score *chokes back a laugh* wins. In Golf there is no strict time limit or defense, you can take basically as long as you want to make a decision on how and where to hit a ball, there's even a caddy who's pretty much telling you want to do the whole time and making the strategic decisions for you. You don't even have to be athletically strong either, technique is good enough.. just look at John Daly and Angel Cabrera. Any game where you can smoke in between performing actions crucial to winning is pathetic, but that's another gripe all together.

There's a reason why so many yuppies and old men play it.

I hate golf as much as the next guy, but I have to admit it's a sport. I don't like it, but consistency is consistency.

And yeah, you have to have some decent strength to put a good wallop on the ball in golf, no matter how good your technique.

It is a contest, not a sport. To me, a sport is something that requires physical exurcion.

All sports are contests, but not all contests are sports.

That's fine, and hey I enjoy a little putt-putt and driving range action every now and then, I got nothing wrong with the game in general. I just don't consider it competitive enough to be called a sport based on my definition. Obviously there's a huge gray area when it comes to golf, I just fall on the side that looks at it like skeet shooting or shot putting.. a man against no one but himself and the elements, not against another person or team.

I think you mean "exertion" there chief. And your maxim is incorrect. Rock climbing is my absolute favorite sport, but there's no contest involved there.

If CURLING is a sport, then I don't see anything wrong with having Competetive eating as a sport.

Curling is like Bocce Ball on ice
