Does it exist anymore? I'm at a loss for what choices I have available to me anymore. I used to play SoF2 a LOT, then migrated to CS:S and played quite a bit of BF2 and BF2142... but it's been a couple years since I got anything new. MW2 is a crapshoot it seems, but is MW1 still good and popular? I just want something new.

Have you tried BioShock? My friend always recommend me that game but I haven't tried it myself.
How about the near classic Black Hawk Down?

Bioshock is not a competitive FPS. I will NEVER play Bioshock and die happy.

Black Hawk Down? Seriously? I can't tell if your entire post is a joke or if you are serious here. Use emoticons.

By "competitive", do you mean leagues? or just player vs player?

In either case, TF2 is a good game to get.

TF2 is great. Maybe left 4 dead or eternal silence, but they aren't exactly competitive FPS verus in l4d can be competitive. Maybe try America's Army 3 its free. Be more specific on what you are looking for.

CS:S and TF2 both have huge competitive communities, UT3 has one but it's not terribly large.

TF2 is competitive and tons 'o fun. Lots of different character classes, so you can almost always find a role that fits your style. You too can be credit to team!

Quake Live is basically Quake 3 in a browser. It's also fun (even though I'm terrible at it) and provides a more "traditional" deathmatch environment.

This. TF2 has more team-based gameplay; CS:S is more fun when you have the ability to rape face.

I have CS:S and TF2. I was looking for more along the lines of BF2, but newer. I wanted to get MW2, but the PC release is a crapshoot. That's why I was wondering if despite the MW2 release if MW1 is still going strong. I might still check out UT3. I had it on the PS3 for a while but I just don't like doing it on the PS3.

As discussed. TF2 is really the last most recent competitive FPS which involves teamwork and skill. There really just isnt much anymore. There are many experienced and skilled players who play TF2. I really dont know what other games you could compare to TF2 that involve the same level of teamwork/strategy/skill/competitive play.

Look at COD MW1/MW2. Ya its somewhat fun FPS game. Does it involve much skill and competitive play? Hell no... Its possibly the most skilless, non-competitive FPS game to ever be conceived. Hardly no really known good players play the game, its just random fun.

I suppose its always been like that. Some FPS games are more skill and teamwork based, others are just mindless fun.

Honestly, I think its a dying breed. As we can see with IW with MW2, companies are starting to cater towards consoles and making money, it takes a lot of smart devs to create a good competitive fps game.

I feel the exact opposite. I find TF2 to have zero teamwork at all and games like R6:V to be all about teamwork.

I really dont know how you guys can call TF2 a skill-based, competitive game. Unless you are playing clan vs clan or something like that its just a random spamfest. It actually discourages skill based play because you are so dependent upon your teammates.

UT3 is about the only FPS left that is purely dependent upon skill. Its one of my favorite games I just wish there were more players. Lots of hardcore guys still playing though.

maybe i'm just not looking correctly, but i think CoD4's time is about up. i'm finding low player counts and only a couple <100 ping servers. i noticed a few more people on since MW2 came out.

TF2 competitive play is strictly 6v6 with specific class limits, random critical hits are disabled and random gun damage is also disabled. There is nothing random about it.

which servers and style do you play? CTF, DM, and TDM are the genres in my favorites

That's why I've always came back to Unreal Tournament III

I've played both TF2 & now I still am playing UT III - if you haven't played UT III it isn't even fair to compare the two.

Another vote here for UT3 but it's hard to find good servers for it. It's really a shame UT3 wasn't more popular, but I guess it isn't suprising since Call of Duty has a much larger general appeal.

TF2 is fun but it really isn't the same thing at all.
