Compiling open source

I've been browsing all of the open source material at Sourceforge lately. There seem to be some pretty cool stuff out there, but I don't know how to make the code usable? What do I need? A compiler? How do I go about getting into this?

Usually they'll have pre-build binaries.

If not, you need a complier for the language they were coded in - i.e Google <language> compiler

alright. For instance, what about the Lame encoder?

common linux commands to compile and install from source.

If you are talking about installing on windows AND there is no .exe, then Ned Flanders' advice is spot on.

alright. For instance, what about the Lame encoder?

The lame encoder just lays there waiting to do its thing. No installation necessary. Usually it gets called by a program such as EAC.

Typically, Linux or BSD installs will have some version of gcc (Gnu C Compiler) installed. If so, jfall is correct in that for most installations, you'll execute the

./configure
make
make install (as root)

However, most source tarballs will include a readme file and/or an installation file with some tips and hints for particular situations.

Windows does not come with a compiler, so you would need to acquire one. You would also need to make sure the source code was designed to work when compiled under Windows.
