One last comment. This is pure entertainment and what keeps this a viable source of interest is us. So if the companies continue to try and take advantage of our wants in this manner, then they will end up loosing more of the market to the console industry. Nvidia should of gone to the manufacturers and tell them that the strength of there product - which btw, coincides with buying fancy PC, accessories, etc etc - is to have a better understanding of what the market will bare and in this they failed miserably.
Think of it for a second if the GTX came out at a retail price of $299 then you would see a huge demand for customers upgrading there motherboards and various components as well as residual monetary gain in an SLI combination!.
Everyone should send that letter I wrote to Nvidia, EVGA, AMD/ATI or anyone else in the industry, otherwise one day you will see even more titles going to the consoles first and foremost.
Case in point: I've been enjoying the PC gaming since the days of 320x240 doom resolution when Carmack and Romero sent it out on the net waves but my interest has wained considerable in the last year that the only exciting game I have played is the Nintendo Wii sports with my kids.
Case in point2: I have 3 boys and the 2 older ones have access to my computer ( rated for there age group and limited to weedends only ) but as much as they enjoy it they are not interested in the format at all - they strictly view it as an extension of entertainment and communication - but the Wii or Gamecube totally dominate there gaming interest.
So here is an entire generation that is growing to learn and expect a 'plug and play' gaming operation without having to modify an ini file or add patches or upgrade system perameters.
I told my son about the GTX and he told me that it was NUTS!! and there was no way he would spend that much.
I also am a subscriber to MaximumPC and believe you me, there not interested in reading it at all.
I'm seeing this everywhere, his friends and the entire gaming community. So go ahead...keep on coming out with mental pricing and you will see this format limited to a very few 'xtremesystem' individuals.
This reminds me of how the high end audio enthusiasts during the '80 would spend a fortune to have the best quality audio they can get, spending an insane amount of money on Cardas cabling or hand made turntable needles ($1000 for one). Now, if it's not surround sound then the interest of true high fidelity has basically diminished in favour of the poor quality audio of an MP3 player.
Have you seen the scale of which notebook computers are dominating the industry? The scale of notebook sales has skyrocketed and continues to gain huge ground over the traditional PC.
Face it, this is a hobby for most of us and liquid cooling, vapor phase changing or liquid nitrogen is in part just a fad for fun. The drive for a better gaming system has alot to do with setting the bar on test results like MadOnions software...which is fine in itself but now with crossfire, sli and incredible price increases - this has left a cadavers in it's path and sooner then later - the cemetary will be full.
